अवधारणा When two different metals react with an acidic solution, they generate electricity.
कहानी In a text attributed to the Rishi Agastya, there is a recipe that reads like a modern engineering blueprint. It describes placing a copper plate and a zinc-mercury amalgam into a clay pot with moist sawdust and copper sulphate. The result? A flow of energy they called Mitra-Varuna. While Alessandro Volta is credited with the battery in 1800, the Agastya Samhita appears to describe the exact chemistry of a wet-cell battery thousands of years earlier, even suggesting it could be used to split water into its gaseous “breaths”.

अर्थ: “Place a well-cleaned copper plate in an earthenware vessel. Cover it with copper sulfate (Shikhi-griva) and moist sawdust. Then place a zinc sheet (Dasta) amalgamated with mercury on top. By their contact, an energy known as Mitra-Varuna (Electricity) is generated.”
संबंधित नवाचार The Agastya Samhita (dated variably and frequently cited in this context) describes a chemical process similar to electroplating for coating copper with gold or silver, as well as the alleged separation of water into Prana Vayu (Oxygen) and Udana Vayu (Hydrogen) using the generated energy.
मजेदार तथ्य Did you know that Mitra और Varuna are Vedic gods that are often associated with opposites? They can represent the positive and negative poles (anode and cathode) .
आधुनिक विरासत Batteries power everything from phones to electric cars, and they serve as the foundation for modern science.
