was damaged, the child would be born with a corresponding defect, such as blindness<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"42,12\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"42,14\"><span class=\"citation-8164\">This wasn&#8217;t just theory; it was the basis for the <\/span><i data-path-to-node=\"42,14\" data-index-in-node=\"50\"><span class=\"citation-8164\">Gotra<\/span><\/i><span class=\"citation-8164\"> system, which prohibited marriage within the same bloodline to prevent recessive genetic diseases\u2014a rule of &#8220;consanguinity&#8221;
