The piece is a Lauda from the 15th century. The lauda was a popular non-liturgical devotional song commonly sung in semi-public devotional gatherings. Laude were developed in Italy from the Italian monophonic songs of the Middle Ages. Their origin and early development were closely connected with St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) as well as with the penitential fraternaties of the 13th and 14th centuries.

Italian immigrants who arrived in New York City during the last quarter of the nineteenth century came from a variety of southern Italian towns. Those from Polla (Salerno) arrived in 1878 and occupied the area around 115th Street. In 1881 a small community of Genovese settled south of 106th Street. Neapolitans chose the area between 106th and 108th Streets while new arrivals from Basilicata lived between 108th and 115th Street. The 1890s saw the arrival of a number of laborers from Calabria. Some immigrants were brought uptown by an Irish-American contractor, JD Crimmins, to work on the First Avenue trolley tracks. Others sought the cleaner air of northern Manhattan and the increased prospect of work in the growing construction trades. By 1884 there were approximately four thousand Italians in Northern Manhattan. Italian Harlem was known as one of New York City Little Italies. Typical of those Little Italies was the celebration of the popular feasts to which were reminiscences of their homes in their native lands. The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was first held in 1881. This feast enlivened the desire to have a church dedicated to the fulfillment of religious duties and to venerate the Blessed Mother. This church would be built by the Italians, and was to be called the parish of the Italians in New York. With the completion of the church came the arrival of the Statue of the Blessed Mother. Research suggests that he started composing as young as nine or eleven years of age. Although he did write some instrumental pieces, it is his writing for the voice that he is famous for, and he is considered to be one of the finest composers to ever set the English language to music. In around 1680, he started expanding his techniques for writing vocal music, largely influenced by Venetian and Roman music brought to London by Italian immigrants. He is also regarded as the greatest composer of English opera. The Blessed Virgins Expostulation and We Sing to Him are both from a two-volume anthology of devotional songs titled Harmonia Sacra. We Sing to Him is a devotion to God, praising him through music and song. The Blessed Virgins Expostulation, (text by Nahum Tate), is a recount of the time Mary couldnt find Jesus after he had stayed behind to speak with the Elders, as a young boy. She is wild with despair, and remembers Herods killing of the innocents, fearing that the same fate has befallen her beloved child. He was born in Grünhain and died in Leipzig. He was one of the first to import the early Italian stylistic innovations into German music, and was one of the most polished composers of the period. On the death of his father, Schein moved to Dresden where he joined the choir of the Elector of Saxony as a boy soprano. In addition to singing in the choir, he received a thorough musical training with Rogier Michael, the Kapellmeister, who recognized his extraordinary talent. From 1603 to 1607 he studied at Pforta, and from 1608 to 1612 attended the University of Leipzig, where he studied law in addition to liberal arts. Next to Mary of Nazareth, the saint most often seen in artwork holding the child Jesus in his arms is St. Anthony of Padua. According to one version of the legend—and there are many—there was a Count Tiso who had a castle about 11 miles from Padua, Italy. One night, his little room suddenly filled up with light. Jesus appeared to Anthony in the form of a tiny child. Passing by the hermitage, the count saw the light shining from the room and St. Anthony holding and communicating with the infant. It is a historical fact that Anthony joined the Order of Friars Minor while Francis was still alive. We know that Anthony attended the Franciscan chapter of Pentecost, 1221. Can there be a more obvious symbol and clue that the Christ child in Anthony's arms represents the very embodiment of the Word of God? The image of Anthony holding the divine infant is a symbol and model for each of us. The image inspires us to go through life clinging to the wonderful mystery of the humble, self-emptying Christ. For me, St Anthony had a deep love for God the Father, because he received the gift of holding the baby Jesus before he died.

Etwa 100 Jahre später konnte man ihn wieder in einigen Kirchen hören, darunter auch in München. Sterzing war schon 14 v. Chr. eine von Drusus gegründete römische Siedlung und hieß damals Vipitenum. Der italienische Name Vipiteno leitet sich davon ab. 1280 wurde Stering durch Graf Meinhard II. zur Stadt ernannt. Im Video werden Bilder von Sterzing gezeigt (eigene und von Wikimedia Commons).
