In one of the most highly anticipated announcements in Thoroughbred racing history, Rachel Alexandra was named 2009 Horse of the Year at the Eclipse Awards Jan. 18 in Beverly Hills, Calif. The announcement was made just before 10:30 pm EST by Alex Waldrop, head of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association in front of a packed house and on live television on TVG. They waved "Girl Power" posters. They sought autographs from the jockey, trainer and owner. And they cheered loudly as the queen of thoroughbred racing in California, the unbeaten Zenyatta, made an encore appearance Sunday at Hollywood Park in appreciation of her adoring fans. The 5-year-old mare who's 14 for 14 in her racing career and headed for retirement in Kentucky was paraded up and down the stretch after the seventh race before 9814 people, the largest crowd of the 27-day autumn meeting.

Another Curlin video. Except that this time, I actually put some effort into it and tried to make it a real fan video instead of just a summary. I think my favourite bit that synchs with the music is when he's alone on screen, and then the rest of the field appears behind him as the strings do their little harmony bit. In fact, I kinda decided it was Curlin's song after the Haskell, when everybody decided to knock him 'cause he had one bad day.

The 57th Santa Anita Handicap may be gone, but Phil Hersh hasn't forgotten. Along with his wife Sophie, Hersh owns The Wicked North, who will risk his No. 1 ranking in the latest Thoroughbred Racing Communications poll against six opponents in the $300000 Californian Sunday at Hollywood Park. For all his success, The Wicked North will always be remembered most for the March 5 Big 'Cap. As the 9-5 favorite, the 5-year-old finished first by 1 1/2 lengths in Santa Anita's richest race, but in a controversial decision, he was disqualified and placed fourth for allegedly interfering with Myrakalu early in the stretch. Hersh and trainer David Bernstein appealed the decision by stewards Ingrid Fermin, Pete Pedersen and Tom Ward to the California Horse Racing Board. After a March 19 hearing in front of referee Steve Schwartz, the stewards' decision was upheld on April 28. Not satisfied, Hersh is continuing the fight. Although he has been told it could take up to two years before the matter is heard, the retired plumbing contractor and longtime horse owner has taken the appeal to Los Angeles Superior Court. In fact, the process has not started yet because neither Hersh nor the CHRB has received the transcript of the hearing from Kennedy Court Reporters. "We need the transcript to go on," Hersh said. "I see no justice in what has been done. It was a kangaroo court, there are no other words for it. (Schwartz) had his mind made up before he even walked (into the hearing). I don't ...

Silver Charm, who won the Kentucky Derby over Captain Bodgit by the length of his gray head, provided a smashing encore today when he won the 122d Preakness by the same head over Free House, with Captain Bodgit third by another head in a three-horse blanket finish. And he set the stage for the Belmont Stakes in three weeks, when he will be racing to become the first colt in 19 years to sweep the Triple Crown. The three rivals re-enacted their photo-finish performances of two weeks ago before 88594 spectators at Pimlico Race Course with a slight reshuffling of the order behind Silver Charm -- but with the same tingling drive to the wire -- in the closest Preakness in 65 years. The top three once more delivered a formful race, outrunning the leading outsider, Touch Gold, who did not appear in the Derby and who stumbled badly at the start of the Preakness. He closed to finish fourth, within 1 1/4 lengths of the three front-runners flying at the head of the field of 10. Some thought General Quarters Sam F. Davis (gr. III) win two starts back was a fluke. But the son of Sky Mesa proved them wrong by powering to a 1 1/2-length victory in the $750000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) on April 11 at Keeneland, and he will now head to next months Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) as a legitimate contender. Bettors sent General Quarters off at 14-1 in the Blue Grass after the gray/gray colt ran fifth in the March 14 Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III). His bullet work at Churchill Downs a week ago did nothing to change their minds. But under the handling of Eibar Coa, General Quarters raced fifth through the backstretch, made his winning move rounding the far turn and took over from Massone at the top of the lane. Hold Me Back, the 2-1 favorite, gave a game chase inside the sixteenth-pole but was no match for the winner. The final time on Polytrack was 1:49.26. Hold Me Back, who entered off a victory in the Lanes End Stakes (gr. II) last month, was runner-up under Kent Desormeaux, 1 1/4 lengths better than third-place Massone and Garrett Gomez. Bob Black Jack, who set the pace in the Kentucky Derby last May, led all the way in winning the $250000 Malibu Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths Friday over Into Mischief on opening day of Santa Anita's 72nd thoroughbred racing season. Bob Black Jack, ridden by David Flores, covered seven furlongs in 1:20.20 and, as the fourth choice in a field of seven, paid $12, $5.20 and $3.60. The win was the fourth in 10 lifetime starts for Bob Black Jack and was worth $150000, raising the career earnings of the 3-year-old California-bred son of Stormy Jack to $594925. Into Mischief, the 22-10 favorite, returned $3.40 and $2.80. Georgie Boy finished third in the race for 3-year-olds and paid $3.40 to show. The first three finishers carried 119 pounds each. Colonel John, who beat Bob Black Jack by a half-length in last April's Santa Anita Derby, finished fourth.
