Red Bull Air Race Highlights Windsor, Ontario June 2010
Duration : 71 Seconds

Credit: Red Bull Air Race © Red Bull Media House redbullairrace.com WINDSOR, Ontario - Austria's Hannes Arch won his third straight race in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship with a stirring performance in Windsor on Sunday, bouncing back with an emphatic victory in Canada just two days after suffering one of the worst pylon hits of his career. Britain's Paul Bonhomme took a close second in the difficult track that straddles the Canada-US border over the Detroit River, his 11th straight podium, while American Kirby Chambliss made the top 3 for the first time this year with third place. Canada's Pete McLeod was a disappointing ninth in front of his home crowd. Arch and Bonhomme were locked in another classic duel on a cool and overcast day in front of a huge crowd of 110000 watching from Windsor and Detroit with about 160000 spectators in attendance for the two days of high-speed, low-altitude racing. Arch, the 2008 World Champion, saved his best for last and shattered the track record with a time of 1 in the final. Bonhomme, the reigning champion, put up a gallant effort to try to beat Arch. The British ace was leading by a fraction of a second after the first of four intervals through the 5-kilometre long race track but couldn't maintain the lead and ended up behind Arch in 1:06:59, just 0.63 seconds off the pace. Chambliss, looking forward to more glory in his home race in New York in two weeks, was 3.03 seconds behind the Austrian in 1:08:99. Britain's Nigel Lamb ...

Red Bull Air Race G Force
Duration : 103 Seconds

Changes in gravity pull which occur when accelerating or decelerating are referred to as G's. The first noticeable physical effect is the force of gravity acting on the body. There are two types of G -- positive G, which the pilots experience as they pull the controls back and negative G which happens when the pilots carry out inverted or upside down manoeuvres. The number of G's is measured on a multiple of 1 G which is the normal compression force on our body that holds us to the earth, enabling us to stand on the ground. An increase to 2 G's would double the force or weight on the body. The closest a regular human being will have come to experiencing the effects of positive G's is most likely on a roller coaster or driving quickly over steep hills. Most manoeuvres in the Red Bull Air Race involve a much higher level of G-force of between 3 and 10 G. So what exactly are the physical effects of G-force? The whole body feels heavy, it takes effort to raise the arms and the head will try to drop down on to the chest with the cheeks hanging down near the jaw. To counteract this, a person will tense their neck and stomach muscles to try and stop the blood flow. "The ugly facial expressions are all part of the straining process the body goes through to survive the high G-forces" explains Mangold, "It's very similar to boxing; lots of hard blows while the body stays tense most of the time in anticipation of being hit". The circulatory system has difficulty maintaining proper ...

Red Bull Air Race San Diego 2009 Review, Hannes Arch Bird Strike
Duration : 188 Seconds

Nicolas Ivanoff of France won the second Red Bull Air Race of the season in San Diego on Sunday with a superb run in the finals. Britains Paul Bonhomme took second place in front of 55000 spectators watching the race over San Diego Bay under bright blue skies 1.11 seconds behind Ivanoff. This is really nice, said Ivanoff, who threw his fists into the air in celebration after climbing out of his new Edge 540. Explosive flying from Ivanoff in both the Super 8 and Final 4 proved that he is a force to be reckoned with. Beating his own outstanding personal best from the Super 8, Ivanoff wiped seconds off his rivals with a course record of 1:17:21. Im really happy. The new plane is great. I thought I had a pretty good run in the final but its always possible someone else comes up with an even faster time. It was only the second career victory for Ivanoff, who won the final race of the 2007 season in Perth, Australia. Arch, who had won a maximum 13 points in the first race and picked up another point by posting the fastest Qualifying time on Saturday, had the speed to win on Sunday and was just ahead of Ivanoff at the first interval. But then a pelican punctured a gaping hole in his horizontal stabiliser shortly before the midway point. Arch said he was startled by the bird hit and was then unable to properly level his wings through the next Air Gate. It was a costly two-second penalty that dropped him behind both Ivanoff and Bonhomme. I was having a really good run and then I ...

2009 Red Bull Air Race Season Review, World Champion Paul Bonhomme
Duration : 233 Seconds

It would be hard for a Hollywood scriptwriter to come up with a more dramatic story than the 2009 Red Bull Air Race World Championship an eminently likeable British veteran who had come so tantalisingly close to winning the title for two straight years pulling out all the stops in the very last run of the very last race of the year in front of a record crowd of 800000 to narrowly beat the dashing defending champion from Austria who was flying in a superior airplane. But that is exactly what happened when Paul Bonhomme came through with a clutch performance in the final race of the season in Barcelona to de-throne defending champion Hannes Arch of Austria. Bonhomme, the most successful pilot in the five years of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship history with 11 career race victories, finally shed his reputation for finishing second in the championship by taking the title in Barcelona with a scintillating performance under pressure. www.redbullairrace.com

Red Bull Air Race Qualification Camp 2008 in Spain
Duration : 182 Seconds

Five young pilots from around the world who successfully completed a week of rigorous training and testing at the Red Bull Air Race Qualification Camp in Spain were awarded the coveted 'Super Licence', the essential document needed for entry into the race. Australia's Matt Hall (37), Canada's Pete McLeod (24), France's Francois Le Vot (38), Germany's Matthias Dolderer (38) and Japan's Yoshihide Muroya (35) all passed the tests with flying colours and were delighted to take home with them their newly acquired 'licence to fly'. It will be decided at a later date if any or how many rookies from the crop of pilots will get the chance to compete in the 2009 Red Bull Air Race World Championship. "I knew that the pilots were all at a very high level going into the camp because we've been working with them in training for the last year," said Red Bull Air Race Aviation Director Heinz Moeller after the camp in Casarrubios outside Madrid wrapped up. "But I was truly amazed that so many by far exceeded expectations. We were all positively surprised how concentrated they were, how well they performed in all areas and how well they took the critiques on board. Their skill level is so high that they could all step up into the race without any problem whatsoever. It's truly an impressive bunch." The 'Super Licence' is no guarantee that they will participate in next year's World Championship but it is a foot in the door. "By getting the Super Licence they are on standby and have to be ...

The Barcelona Track: One Of The Hardest Circuits In 2009
Duration : 156 Seconds

Alejandro Maclean gives you an exclusive introduction of the 2009 race track in Barcelona. Barcelona is going to be one of the hardest tracks this year, said Drew Searle, one of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship's trio of race directors who helped design the course for the 3-4 October race. Its very much a turning race. These guys will be turning the whole time and trying to get their energy going from one direction into another direction 180 degrees the other way without pulling too much G and without getting their lines wrong. Its going to be a really challenging track. Searle said waves on the Mediterranean could make Barcelona extra tricky for pilots because the swells could cause the Air Gates anchored to the sea floor rise and fall slightly. Because the pilots have to make sure their planes are at precisely the right level going through the Air Gates, they will also have to keep in mind the possibility that the pylons might rise or fall a bit just as they approach the gates. www.redbullairrace.com

Alejandro Maclean - Red Bull Air Race Pilot
Duration : 74 Seconds

Alejandro Maclean of Spain made a major leap forward in 2007, climbing to a highly competitive sixth place with 16 points in his third season in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship after finishing a disappointing ninth in 2006 and 2005. Maclean, who owes his name to a Scottish grandfather, lost a lot of weight last season, flew smart and was a constant threat to the race hierarchy, reaching the semi-finals four times. Ultimately it was only a lack of consistency that prevented the Spanish pilot with a highly competitive nature from finishing higher. That should change in 2008, according to the intense man from Madrid. "The highlight of the year 2007 was getting second place in Rio," said Maclean, who also had three fourth place finishes in Istanbul, London and Perth. "But in general, I was pleased that I was flying with a cleaner style with only a few minor penalty seconds and pylon hits last year. The goal for 2008 is to improve my performance further and get on the podium as often as possible. The ultimate goal is, logically, winning." Maclean's interest in flying began as a child when he built model airplanes and operated remote controlled planes. He climbed into a cockpit for the first time at 18 when he bought an ultralight, the first of a Championship of planes he would own on the way to winning two Spanish aerobatic championships. He has had a lot of good fortune in his flying career, suffering multiple broken bones from a crash when the propeller broke apart ...
