Fastest 1/4 mile racewalking accompanied by a leashed dog with a Swahili name
Duration : 220 Seconds

This record was set for www.urdb.org Art Hoffman stipulates the record must be set on a track or otherwise measured flat course. Must be standing still when timer begins. Dog must be beside, not pulling, the racewalker, who must observe the two rules of racewalking no lifting and no bent knee. (Racewalking, an Olympic sport, is NOT power walking or speed walking, though often confused with them). "Chenji" is Swahili word for "change", dog may have any Swahili name. Special caution: because this record involves an animal, safety is paramount. Contestants should only pursue record when temperature is moderate. If attempted on a street, traffic should be little or none.

Racewalk Training: Gary at Austin High Track 11/ 7/ 09
Duration : 136 Seconds

Gary, Age 65, Austin, TX. Two weeks back from Dave mcgovern's Advanced Clinic in California, I am working specifically on 1. arms, 2. knee drive especially to pull my back leg out as far as possible before toe-off, 3. active feet and 4. flipping lower leg forward into heel down. I am impressed with how important the arms are to the whole process. Easy to work on legs and feet and forget that powerful arms are a major part of what propels a racewalker forward. Racewalking is arms, almost as much as it is legs. I tend to lose concentration and neglect my arms; they are not automatic yet. When I use them powerfully, I can really feel the forward pull. The behind the body gait is problematical. I come close at times but, for the most part, I am still coming up off my back toe before my back leg is extended all the way out, ie the back knee bends a little too early, before I am all the way up on that toe. Part of that is technique, I think and part -- but maybe all -- is tight hip flexors that prevent me from getting the groin stretch necessary to pull out that back leg. When I get more warmed up, I think my hips get more flexible, therefore the back leg pulls out more. Yesterday, I was aware of how the entire leg movement -- start where you like, but let's say, starting with heel-down in front -- is a unit. Not pieces strung together but a smooth, flowing, circle. "Wheels". Heel down becomes pull back becomes that flat foot going as far back as possible, which turns into ...

Racewalk Training: Gary at Austin High Track 9/26/09
Duration : 208 Seconds

Gary, age 65, Austin, Texas. Still amazes me how much faster racewalking seems when one is doing it then when watching it on video. My last pass R to L in the back and forths was pretty good form and I managed to stand up straight, finally. But, as in all the others, I still do not hold my back foot down long enough; I come off my toes before my back ankle is extended all the way open. Some ongoing problems to work on: (1) right knee -- it wants to soften, probably because that leg is a little longer and wants to compensate. (2) hold the back foot down longer so as to open that back ankle up and tip-toe off just as my heel comes down - just that would add several inches to each step. (3) more hip flexibility would give me a longer stride, as well. (4) do it all faster, consistently. My side-to-side worries me. Does not appear that my hip is collapsing outward anymore; my legs seem to come straight back now. And I have observed some really good racewalkers who have at least this much side-to-side. But if I am wasting energy swaying back and forth that I could put into going forward, then that is something I need to fix.

1987 US Olympic Festival 20Km Walk-Part 1
Duration : 594 Seconds

The US Olympic Festival (USOF) was an important multi-sport developmental meet in which athletes competed against each other by region. It was held 14 times in different US cities in the non Olympic Games years from 1978-1995. The 1987 USOF racewalking events were held on the campus of Duke University in Durham, NC on July 25 and 26, 1987. The 20Km walk featured one past (the aptly named Larry Walker) and five future Olympians Gary Morgan, Andy Kaestner, Curt Clausen, Herman Nelson and Allen James. Morgan and Kaestner were near the top of their game, while Clausen, Nelson and James were just beginning their Olympic journey. Other 1980's walkers featured include Ray Funkhouser and Paul Schwartzberg. The PA announcer is Rob Montgomery and the videographer is Ole Holsti.

1991 World Cup of Walking
Duration : 391 Seconds

The 15th IAAF World Racewalking Cup was held June 1 and 2, 1991 in San Jose, California. In the 50Km event, held June 2, Chief Judge Gary Westerfield had some difficulty in convincing leader Andrey Perlov that he had been disqualified. A few years later, an even bigger controversy arose when Mexico's Bernardo Segura was notified of his DQ after finishing first in the Olympic 20Km and while on the phone with Mexico's president. This led to changes to speed up the notification process for athletes to minimize post race dq's. However, in Perlov's case as shown in the video, he was told to stop a full 2Km before the finish, one complete lap. I competed in the US qualifier for this race and in it, one of the athletes knocked the warning paddle out of the Chief Judge's hands. I am aware of incidents where judges have been assaulted by angry parents, received death threats (happened to me once) and have had their rulings overturned by meet directors who didn't like the outcome. And you wonder why they aren't lining up to become judges.

Racewalk Training: Gary at Austin High Track 3/14/10
Duration : 70 Seconds

Gary, age 65, Austin, Texas. Racewalking for 3 1/2 years. Best yet, I think. I'm actually up straight, for the most part. A bit lighter on my feet, ie, off the toes and quicker at it. Stride length a tiny bit longer. Those passes toward the end are pretty quick, for me. Need to get my foot-speed up and be able to keep it there longer. There are just so many elements to form and execution that I really have to pay attention to. Lapse on any of them and my pace drops dramatically. Hoping the process of those elements requiring less and less conscious attention will continue. I realize that I am unlikely to ever get very fast. I was never a very fast runner, either, even when I was much younger. But I should at least be able to get the form pretty much right, if I live long enough!

Racewalk Training: Gary at Austin High Track 8-2-09
Duration : 110 Seconds

Gary, Austin, TX, Age 65. Did 37:12 here for 3 miles. Yes, ungodly slow but I am getting faster as my technique improves. I can see from studying a still from this video that I am not holding my back foot long enough before popping forward off my toes. Will work on that to increase gait length behind. Then do it faster. Have my 1 mile down under 11:30 now. Would like to get a minute off that and at least 3 or so minutes off my 3 mile time.
