Tero Pitkamaki of Finland won the javelin throw when his second attempt of 89.16 meters beat Olympic gold medallist Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway. Having clinched the title, Pitkamaki emphatically threw for a first place distance of 90.33 meters on his last attempt. (WCSN, WCSN.com)

Daegu, South Korea - 02/09/2011 Russia's Maria Abakumova upstaged world record holder Barbora Spotakova to win the women's javelin title at the world championships on Friday. Abakumova took gold with a championships record of 71.99 metres, the second-longest throw of all time. Czech Spotakova launched a season's best 71.58 for the silver medal while South Africa's Sunette Viljoen took the bronze with 68.38. Detlef Michel of East Germany was the competition favorite, having thrown over 94m during that season, but he only became 3rd. Uwe Hohn was just barely 20 years old when he won the competition with 91.34m, a new personal best. This throw was the furthest throw in the championship history since 1969, when Janis Lusis threw his championship record (91.52m) Hohn missed it only by 18 centimeters. The world record during that time was 96.72m, held by the Hungarian thrower Ferenc Paragi. Olympic Champion Dainis Kula became fourth with 87.84m. Two years later Uwe Hohn became the first and only man who ever threw the javelin over 100m. Out of the 13 competitors of this final, there were 9 of them, who were or later became 90m throwers. All of them hit 88.50m at one point during their career. This was another controversial Olympic final. In the 1980 Olympics, held in Moscow, the favorite was Hungary's Ferenc Paragi but he did not perform well, finishing 10th. East German Detlef Michel was also highly considered but did not even make the final. There were few other big names left in the final. The best Soviet thrower was the Latvian Dainis Kūla but in the final he opened with two fouls. On his third throw he got off a big toss, but it quite obviously landed flat and was a foul. However, the official waved the white flag, indicating a fair throw, and they measured it -- at 88.88 (291-7¼) he was now in the lead. Writing in _Track & Field News_ Jim Dunaway noted, "'Incompetent officiating' is the kind of explanation one can make. 'Cheating' is the word many people used. Judge for yourself." Unfortunately, while the throw is on this video, they don't show how the javelin landed. In the next round Kūla hit 91.20 (299-2½) which would win him the gold medal.
