April 1996 The town of Jaipur in India, home to the game of polo, prepares for the festival of Holi. On this special day, they play elephant polo against a backdrop of desert plains and rose coloured palaces. A slow and ponderous game where goals are scored almost accidentally. Elephants wander around the pitch with painted trunks and fluorescent toenails. This is the World Elephant Polo Championships, hosted in Nepal. A pitch of jumbo proportions was set up at the Bardia National Park. Teams from all over the globe came to take part in this special tournament including Scotland, the United Arab Emirates and Austria. [Peter Prentice, World Elephant Polo Association]: "We have supported this country (Nepal) with Elephant Polo ever since 1982 and will continue to do so. And this year in fact is the biggest tournament we have ever had -twelve teams competing in these championships and three new countries coming to the frame- so we are very excited about this year." Two British adventurers started up the sport about thirty years ago. The rules of the game are similar to horse polo. But drivers control the elephants, to let the players concentrate on their extra long polo sticks. [Creel Price, Australian Team Captain]: "These beasts they love it, they're out there...they love it. They actually know what's going on. If the ball gets under them they know exactly what to do -not put their foot on the ball- its just incredible what they do. You can tell they genuinely love the competition and although its interesting, some of them don't get on with each other and theyre playing against each other in some ways." No more than three elephants are allowed at a time in one half of the pitch. This is to avoid the animals' herd instincts of huddling themselves into a crowd. A rugby team from New Zealand has taken part in the 2012 King's Cup Elephant Polo in the Thai resort town of Hua-Hin, 300 kilometres south of Bangkok on Tuesday. As their colleagues at home prepare for the Rugby World Cup, this team prepared for their pachiderm polo debut after a traditional Haka- the Maori dance. For a beginner, it is quite hard for the player to control an elephant, as on first-time elephant polo player discovered. [Charles Riechelmann, New Zealand All Blacks Player]: "It's very interesting. I liked it. It's fun but it's very interesting. It's hard to control the elephants to do what we want to do. I think that's the hard part." And sometimes elephants can go unexpectedly naughty and don't want to play. [Chitra Mepburn, Captain of the Spice Girl Team]: "The game was good except for elephants issue. My elephant sat down in the middle of the game, so we have to change. My other friend's elephant decided to attack another elephant, so we have to change again. The event in question of being polo with an adventurous twist thus was the birth of polo played on the back of elephants. The World Elephant Polo Association established the governing rules for Elephant Polo in 1982; the association has its headquarters at the Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge in the Royal Chitwan Park in Nepal, which is where the World Elephant Polo Tournament played every year on a grassy airfield in Megauly. This tournament is played within a relatively small circuit, including the countries Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. In Thailand, the King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament was first launched in Hua Hin by Anantara Resort in 2001. In 2006, the tournament moved to Golden Triangle and was hosted by Anantara Resort Golden Triangle.
