It was a beautiful February day to take a guided dog sled trek to check out the Great Divide Tour and hang out with some very cool canines. This video was taken while touring a Dog Sled Summer Camp...one of the excursions offered by Princess Cruises' Alaskan trip. I opted for this tour in Juneau on a wet day, but it was a blast nonetheless. The musher is Abbie West. I highly recommend letting her give you a ride with her adorable dogs. Notice how quiet the dogs are while running and doing what they love most...race on cosmic canines!

CanaDog Kennels begins training for the 2009/2010 season. Fall training begins with the Quad. We race sprint, running mostly Canadian Racing Hounds from the "Slim" line, with a mix of Seppala and Alaskan Huskies. All the dogs run together in large teams at a slower, controlled pace. When the temperature drops, we increase speed and distance ~ dogs are separated into smaller teams with matching athletic abilities.

Showing a typical day in the life of a team of sledge dogs, inside the Arctic circle, near the Alta River in Lapland. The dogs are not the usual Husky type. They are specially selected from domestic dogs and trained for sledge racing. They have a high power to weight ratio and consume about 20% of their weight each day in raw meat and very high protein dog-food. As you can see, they really love their work. And at night they sleep out in the snow. It was quite a challenge to film the dogs at extreme low temperatures with wind-chill -while also handling the sledge. At such low temperatures it is important to keep moving all day with only brief stops for a drink. At night we stayed in wood-fired lodges used by the Sami people for fishing, hunting and herding reindeer.
