Here is my mother competing in Rally Obedience at the Denver Dog show in February. The dog is our 9-year-old Berenese Mountain Dog named Tuba. He just wanted to go and have a great time and ended up doing excellent and finishing his really Novice title that weekend with scores of 96, 97 and a perfect 100.

Many rally exhibitors don't know the rules, don't understand the rules, and don't understand how to apply the rules (specifically the exercise descriptions and principal parts of the exercise description) to their performance. What must they do to avoid the dreaded "IP" (Incorrect Performance) with their dog? How should they train? What should they strive for? What is good and what is bad when it comes to their dog's sit - what is brisk heel - what is a straight down - and the list goes on and on. In this series of videos my Tues AM rally class students and dogs demonstrate different exercises - and we discuss the details of each. There are some beautiful examples, some examples of things that need improvement, and some really bad examples. It's hoped that by calling attention to the fine details these videos will help those who have to train alone improve their understanding of the rules and the application of them. BUT - the video is NOT a substitute for actually reading and studying the AKC Rally Regulations - so do that first, and then these videos will help you a lot more.

This is another move that it pays to practice the footwork before trying it with your dog. In CARO, the dog moves with you as you turn. In CKC & AKC, the dog stays in a sit while you turn and take a step, then cue you dog to get into heel position and sit.

Cones should be placed 5 feet apaprt, but becasue i couodn't fit them in, these are a little closer. To over-train for this (and other moves involving the cones), practice with the cones closer together ( 3-4 feet). This is harder than with them further apart. So when you go to trial, it will be easier for your dog. This is the first of a series of videos showing each CARO (Canadian Rally Obedience) Rally O move separately. Views are from each side, back and front. Tips are given for each. Each move is described in detail at: canadianrallyo.ca Rally is a great starting point for young dogs to learn behaviors for trials (fantastic prep for agility!), adult dogs with stress or performance issues, great for senior dogs who need less active activities but still need to have work to do and for people who don't like to run or who can't think on their feet! Totally me! While CARO behaviors are fun, the video taping is stressful for both Jessie and I and so we will be taking it slow. Current as at June 2010 rules.

This was Jedi's second run in Rally-O. We attended a Rally-O workshop designed to teach us the sport so that we can help get this sport off the ground in Australia (we do not have it here). We had a fantastic time! Jedi scored 94/100 Deductions: Exercise 1: tight leash (1 point deducted) Exercise 4: retry (3 points deducted) Exercise 10: crooked sit (1 point deducted) Exercise 12: tight leash (1 point deducted)

We scored 202 for our second Q. Forgot to "finish" in the bonus and lost 5 points for that...also missed a few points for her bumping into me and one for holding the leash to tight.
