Saturday 10 October the first of four canoe disciplines started at the 2009 Sydney World Masters Games: Canoe Polo. This video news flash gives an overview of Monday the 12th where all the finals took place. A more detailed game report of the two Grand Finals (Women's and Men's 30+) will be published Wednesday evening. (Turn your sound up) This is a canoe polo competition between three regions in New Zealand - Central, Northern and Mainland. The video is of some highlights of the games. About canoe polo: Canoe polo is a game played in kayaks with 5 people on each team. The object of the game is to score goals by throwing a ball into a suspended net (which is guarded by a goalkeeper's paddle). The players can dribble and use their paddles on the ball, but can not hold the ball for longer than 5 seconds. Also, players can push the person in possession of the ball (so it helps to be able to roll!). Canoe polo is a fast game growing rapidly in popularity around the world. The New Zealand women's canoe polo team, The Paddle Ferns, lost narrowly to Germany at the World Cup earlier this year to win a silver medal. Well done girls!! IRAN, Tehran : After the Islamic revolution in Iran, it was forbidden for women to take part in sporting activities as it would have brought them into direct contact with men, be they umpires or mere spectators. The strict Islamic dress code, which obliges women to cover their heads and bodies in public, added an extra obstacle. Many sport federation rules forbid competitors from wearing veils or all body clothing, which effectively excludes Iranian women from taking part in international events. Canoe polo offers one way around the rules.
