Camel races in Shahaniya, Qatar. Racing on a six kilometer track, these camels can really move. I clocked them doing 50 KPH at one point! Camels are a little different from other four legged creatures, such as horses or deer, in that camels walk and trot with both legs on each side working in unison, rather than opposing legs. In other words, when a camel walks, both left legs move forward, then both right legs move forward, and so on. With most quadrapeds, the left hind leg and right fore leg move together, and the right hind leg and left fore leg move together. Watch toward the end of the video where the camels are just walking or trotting. This makes for an extremely rocky ride on camels if you happen to be in the saddle. Very uncomfortable, but these animals just keep on going, like the energizer bunnie!

Until 2005, hundreds of children were recruited into the centuries-old Arab sport of camel racing because of their low weight and height, which meant the camels could run faster. Many children suffered injuries such as broken legs and hands from falling off camels, which can run at up to 30km per hour. Now, instead of a child, camels in the UAE are ridden by small robots which are tied onto camels by hand.

Went to Al Ain in the UAE to go see some early morning camel racing. Whilst there I went back to a farm where the racing camels are kept and fed, cleaned and rode one for myself.

Racing with my Camel. Nessie and I have been doing this since she was a couple weeks old. We walk together, then turn around...I say, "Go!" and we run!!! She runs really crazy and I try to stay out of her way. Nessie LOVES to run. And she usually wins... :)

Yesterday (9-10-10) I attended Virginia City's world famous camel races, which also included ostrich racing (both bareback and chariot) as well as a first time zebra competition. For the kids there were emu herding and chicken herding contests. It was also the first chance to use my new video camera so I was rookie, but I'm still happy with the how these first videos turned out. Sound quality leaves something to be desired. The cam is a Sony HDR CX-150 and cost $467.

Camel racing is a popular sport in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Australia, and Mongolia. Camels can run at speeds up to 65 km/h (18 m/s; 40 mp/h) in short sprints and they can maintain a speed of 40km/h (11 m/s; 25 mp/h) for an hour. In the past, Camels were controlled by child jockeys, but allegations of human rights abuses have led to nationwide bans on underage labor in the UAE and Qatar. The controversy over the enslavement of children has led to use of robot-controlled camels.

Filmed at the Al Lisaili camel track in Dubai. The UAE banned the use of child jockeys in commercial camel racing in 2002. Robot jockeys are now used, the whip is operated remotely by the camel owner who follows the camels in a 4x4.

Coveted by wealthy shaikhs of the Gulf region, these prized thoroughbreds will set the racecourses of the Gulf on fire, in high-stakes races that rival horse races in both prestige and money. Camel races are conducted over a period of two days. The first day features 12 rounds of races, arranged in order of the ages of competing camels.
