This video was taken on December 7th, 2009, at a match between the "Flippers" and "Sam-n-Andy's" in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. I wanted to put this up because as a kid growing up in Whitehorse, I watched this game played alot, but in Washington State, where I now live, it's always shocked me to see how unknown this sport is. I generally explain it as a cross between lacrosse and ice hockey, but even that is confusing to understand. So, I thought maybe this video would help, at least a little. Enjoy! It is played in a hockey rink, either indoors or outdoors, depending on climate and location. Broomball is very popular in the Canadian province of Manitoba, where Saint-Claude is the Broomball Capital of the World. Broomball is also gaining popularity around the world, particularly in the United States, Australia, and Japan. In a game of broomball there are two teams, each consisting of six players: a goaltender and five others. The object of the game is to score more goals than your opponent. Goals are scored by hitting the ball into your opponent's net using your broom. Tactics and plays are similar to those used in sports such as ice hockey, roller hockey and floorball. This is Broom Hockey Video: Not broomball! How to even begin to describe Broom hockey? People live for the sport of Broom hockey and die for it! Broom hockey is a combination of hockey, football, and soccer. The objective is to have BIG hits on people because Broom hockey is full contact and BIG runs on the ice with the puck being carried by your broom. No one cares/remembers if you score a goal. (Well, some people do). Classic Broom hockey moves are some of the following: checking, trash talking, stiff-arming, slide tackling, shuck & driving, running, sliding, and (of course) good gaming! DISCLAIMER - BROOM HOCKEY IS NOT, AND NEVER WILL BE BROOMBALL! Broomball is for hippies and ice skaters! We use a puck instead of a ball. You cannot kick the puck, and you cannot use your hands. The color of your helmet tells you what team you're on and you go on the ice with your shoes, because who doesn't want to see someone slip and fall? Broomhockey is played with a certain piece of equipment, custom brooms, (not sticks with plastic on the end) which are made for trapping the puck, so you can run with it!
