Searching for Traditional Khmer Martial arts Antonio Graceffo describes how his Asian martial art adventure began in Taiwan, then lead to the Shaolin Temple, followed by Thailands last Muay Thai Temple, studying with Kru Bah and eventually took him to Cambodia, where he was the first westerner to study Bokator, traditional Khmer martial art. Along the way, he also learned Bradal Serey and trained in professional boxing with cambodias lead international trainer, Paddy Carson. In the shadow of Angkor Wat, Antonio Graceffo travels to Siem Reap, Cambodia to train with Pirum, the lead instructor at the first major Bokator academy outside of Phnom Penh. Grand Master San Kim Saen had a vision of sending emissaries to all of the corners of Cambodia, and eventually all over the world, to help spread and preserve the ancient Cambodian martial art. The school in Siem Reap is extremely important because Siem Reap enjoys more than twenty times as much tourism as Phnom Penh. The Siem Reap school is the one more likely to be visited by foreign students. If you go to see Angkor Wat, please stop by and see Pirum. You can take some lessons, see a demonstration or stay and do serious study, earning a first certificate in Bokator.

Cambodias ancient martial art of Bokator was almost lost. Working together, grand Master San Kim Saen and Antonio Graceffo struggle to promote and preserve the art. In the two years, since the last Bokator video was filmed, Grand Master has labored tirelessly to bring up the overall fighting level of the Bokator students. Their athleticism, strength to body weight ratio, and flexibility were never in question. Their shins are hard as iron. Their stand up fighting is gradually reaching the level of pro-kickboxers. Now, the Grandmaster is beginning to focus on grappling; stand up grappling first, and submissions next.

The Grand Master teaches Antonio elbow techniques and Antonio spars with Italian Bokator student, Andrea Maniaci, who has been living in the Bokator school, preparing for his green krama exam.

Training Bokator in Cambodia in November 2006 at the Yuthakun Khom Academy. The person teaching me is the son of one of the last remaining Bokator teachers. From what i had learned, Bokator is actually a part of an even much larger and broader khmer art called Yuthakun Khom. It was by far one of the most enlighting martial art experiences I've ever had. They do not have much money (in fact my trainer fights in khmer boxing tournaments to support his family), yet faithfully dedicate themselves to the revival of this uniquely Khmer art. One of the most important episodes of Martial Arts odyssey: Antonio spent 18 months in Cambodia trying to find even one surviving master of the Cambodian martial art of Bokator. His search eventually lead him to Grand Master San Kim Saen whose story of courage and suffering under the murderous Khmer Rouge regime is an inspirational taleof survival. After the end of the repressive Communist period he risked his life to rebuild the martial art and restore the Khmer heritage. When Antonio broke the story in Black Belt Magazine it was the first time that Bokator had ever been seen by anyone outside of Cambodia. Antonio went on to study Bokator over the next several years, while coordinating several international documentary film teams and TV shows who helped promote the art throughout the world. Eventually Derek Morris and Antonio Graceffo would be the first foreigners to be awarded the Black Krama. Derek earned his instructor certificate and Black Krama in the entire Bokator system. Antonio earned Black Krama in Bokator fighting. Khmer people find it important to show the world their art and culture. They also wish to reclaim the name, as Thai martial arts are so much more widely known and practiced in the west.
