MELANESIA - VANUATU
Duration : 330 Seconds

Vanuatu is a Melanesian archipelago in the Pacific ocean. Port of call is Vila, 2010. The Ni-Vans, short for Ni-Vanuatu (people of Vanuatu) speak an English pigeon lingua franca named WANTOK. This contact language started out as a language of trade comparable to the (Pasar) Malay language in Indonesia. The Ni-Vans nation is composed of 150 different tribes over 80 islands, which all have their own distinguished languages. The Ni-Van do not understand eachothers languages. The Ni-Van celebrate their culture(s) which is enjoying a revival brought on by (mostly Australian) tourism entering the region. However most of the cultural activity is still strongly rooted in their Adat, which they call Kastom.

Hymns in church, Bislama style, Vanuatu
Duration : 308 Seconds

Presbyterian church service, Peskarus Village, The Maskelynes. The choir comes out to sing and I'm invited to move to the front for a closer view. The women in the choir have plain coloured island dresses on, mostly white, I've not seen plain ones before. Voices mingle harmoniously, singing in Bislama; the pigeon English form used in Vanuatu, useful so that people with different island languages can communicate with each other. Many ni-Van speak three or more languages including Bislama. These people pray a lot. Daily morning devotion begins at 3:30am, or thereabouts, when the first volley of up to 22 clangs come from the ancient diver's tank suspended from a frame and stuck with a rod. The volley is repeated at random time intervals and lengths until sunrise and I was awake for all of them :)

English language school in Vanuatu.AVI
Duration : 40 Seconds

While in Vanuatu I visited several schools. This particular school was an English language school so I was able to talk to the kids. Visiting was truly an amazing experience. These people are so poor that parents struggle to be able to provide lunches for their children. After sixth grade, parents need to pay about $20 per year to keep their kids in school, and many of them are unable to do so. Yet the people are so happy. It was a very inspiring place to visit.

Vanuatu Sand Drawings
Duration : 311 Seconds

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Situated in the South Pacific, the Vanuatu archipelago has preserved a unique and complex tradition of sand drawing. This multifunctional writing is more than an indigenous artistic expression and it occurs in a wide range of ritual, contemplative and communicative contexts. The drawings are produced directly on the ground, in sand, volcanic ash or clay. Using one finger, the drawer traces a continuous meandering line on an imagined grid to produce a graceful, often symmetrical, composition of geometric patterns. This rich and dynamic graphic tradition has developed as a means of communication among the members of some 80 different language groups inhabiting the central and northern islands of Vanuatu. The drawings also function as mnemonic devices to record and transmit rituals, mythological lore and a wealth of oral information about local histories, cosmologies, kinship systems, song cycles, farming techniques, architectural and craft design, and choreographic patterns. Most sand drawings possess several functions and layers of meaning: they can be read as artistic works, repositories of information, illustration for stories, signatures, or simply messages and objects of contemplation. Sand drawings are not merely pictures, but refer to a combination of knowledge, songs, and stories with sacred or profane meanings. A master sand drawer must therefore ...

Makai in Vanuatu
Duration : 116 Seconds

Kai and I went to Tanna Island in Vanuatu in January 2011. While wandering along looking for somewhere to camp for the night we met a wonderful girl who introduced us to her family. They fed us, showed us around the island, taught us some of the local language and even took us up Yasur volcano! We stayed with the John family for three nights, singing and laughing, just as part of the family. It was hard to believe we had by chance met on a road in the middle of nowhere, and we were so happy to have stayed with them talking and learning rather than camping alone. On the last day the John family had a great idea - why not continue this experience and start a home stay in their village. So boom, here is an advertisement for the newly created "Tanna Homestay" made from clips of our time with the beautiful John family. Be sure to visit them when you are in Vanuatu and pass this on to your traveling friends. Tanna Homestay - for the real Tanna experience! Tanna.Homestay@gmail.com Ph: 006787738308 or 006785600027

POET'S SALARY 1
Duration : 83 Seconds

THE POET'S SALARY For the first time in years, on the small island of Mota Lava, just north of Vanuatu a new song will be written in the language of their ancestors-the language of god Quat - and will enter the custom directory. What is more surprising is that this new traditional song is written in honor of a white man, a young French linguist adopted by a family on the island, and everyone there affectionately nicknamed "Alex . To attend the opening ceremony of this truly epic, as Masten, the official bard of the island, composed for several years, Alex arrives at Motalava with his wife, two children and a colleague, ethnomusicologist, Monika. But once arrived on the scene, things do not go exactly as planned ... Directed and produced by Eric Wittershiem, 2009 Camera : Eric Wittersheim – Editing : Cecile Kielar Sound : Nicolas Becker, Sebastien Pierre.
