We hiked for three hours to get to this small village in the middle of a steamy jungle. These villagers live off the land. There are no roads phones or electricity to the village. The people used to be cannibals but gave that up when western culture invaded the islands. I still think fondly about these people, and would almost like to give up this crouded city and join them. They have a great life.

This is the cooking process for making Laplap (food). These people have no electricity, so they cook over an open fire (hot rocks). This was at one of the better off villages. It felt like we droped into 1840. Access to the island was a small plane and a grass runway.

The Island of Tanna was alerted with the Red light on the 12th of Wednesday January 2011. By then the Cyclone was located at Erromango, and was slowly moving on the South Westly direction. Reporting devastating damages on environment ,especially food crops and farming and traditional building with minor damages on the vulnerable concrete building especially iron roof blown off. Heavy rains with some flooding especially on the island of Erromango and Tanna causing damage to accessibility for transports from East to West Tanna, road are blocked by debris from flooding and falling trees and branches.

So, too, are health problems linked to being overweight. The WHO says a major reason for the rising obesity rates is an increase in imported foods. It says many Pacific islanders have replaced their traditional diets of vegetables and fruits with imported processed foods. Doctor Temu Waqanivalu is with the World Health Organization's South Pacific office in Suva, Fiji. He says many of the imported products lack nutritional value. But they are widely available, he says, and often cost less than healthier foods.He says: "In some of the places, you'd be amazed to see how a bottle of Coke is cheaper than a bottle of water."Doctor Waqanivalu says the increase in imported foods is only part of the problem. He says problems with agriculture production limit the availability of healthier foods. And a lack of physical activity among many Pacific islanders only adds to the obesity problem. The WHO says more than fifty percent of the population is overweight in at least ten Pacific island countries. The rate is as high as eighty percent among women in the territory of American Samoa. Fiji had the lowest obesity rate at thirty percent.In all, almost ten million people live in Pacific island countries.
