Grassroots, Those Who Vote (Grassroots , ceux qui votent) 2003 85 April 2002, a few days before the election, in Port-Vila, capital of the Republic of Vanuatu. Here, the campaign doesnt take place on television, but in the streets. The film gives voice to the grassroots electorate and to some of the newly created parties. Among them, the NCA of Sabi Natonga, a young and ruthless leader who claims the support of the numerous migrants coming from Tanna island. Far from the exotic image which often envelops Vanuatu, this film takes us right into the heart of the political life of this small Pacific archipelago. Bien que les documents les plus anciens concernant la musique accompagnant cette danse remontent au dix-septième siècle, le rituel est probablement issu de rites préchrétiens de purification et de fertilité qui utilisaient le symbole du cheval, animal vénéré comme incarnation du soleil. Le nom du rituel vient de Căluş, lembouchure en bois de la bride du cheval. Le rituel du Căluş consiste en un ensemble de jeux, de parodies, de chants et de danses. Il était exécuté par des danseurs hommes, les Căluşari, accompagnés de deux violonistes et dun accordéoniste. Les jeunes hommes étaient initiés au rituel par un vataf (maître) ayant lui-même hérité des connaissances des descântece (pouvoirs magiques) et des pas de danse de ses prédécesseurs. Arborant des chapeaux de couleur, des chemises brodées et des pantalons ornés de clochettes, les Căluşari exécutent des danses complexes qui mêlent frappement de pieds, claquement de talons, sauts et balancement de jambes.
