This is a dairy farm where we spent the night near Waldstatt, Appenzell, Switzerland. They milk about 15 cows. Each cow has a bell with a separate, distinct tone. With most of the windows in the house open, we could hear specific cows grazing from one side of the house to the other throughout the night. (Abby is making noises in the background.)

In Aeschi, Switzerland one can find glimpses into a rural community that somewhat resists corporatization. There is one farmer named Ueli that lives that resistance. The hands on approach he takes to farming is evident in the beauty of his farm and in the peaceful nature of his animals. As Switzerland joins other post-industrial nations in producing mega farms, people like Ueli and their small farms are disappearing. Cows with horns too are rapidly becoming a sign of the past. In this time of transition a Swiss herd of cows will have those with and without horns. The horned animals are the oldest and when they are gone, they will be replaced by the ones without horns. De-horning is symbolic of the need to standardize.

In Kenya, small-scale farmers are particularly vulnerable to the vagaries of weather, often losing their entire investment when droughts or floods destroy their crops. Crop insurance is usually too costly for such operations. But a Swiss-based foundation is now offering low cost insurance through a program called "Kilimo Salama," or "safe farming." In mid-April the open-air museum of Ballenberg near Brienz will open its doors to the public for the 34th time. But before visitors can dive into rural life as it used to be, the staff still have a lot of work to do. What is it like to farm on the side of a mountain? Host Dan Hoffman learns from two University of Minnesota students, Chelsea Berndt and Meg Hintzen, and their leader, Julie Tesch of the Minnesota Agricultural Education Council, who traveled to Switzerland to learn about Alpine Farming.
