Dairy Farm Near Waldstatt, Appenzell, Switzerland
Duration : 77 Seconds

This is a dairy farm where we spent the night near Waldstatt, Appenzell, Switzerland. They milk about 15 cows. Each cow has a bell with a separate, distinct tone. With most of the windows in the house open, we could hear specific cows grazing from one side of the house to the other throughout the night. (Abby is making noises in the background.)

An African take on Swiss alpine farming
Duration : 317 Seconds

A social anthropologist from West Africa has been touring Swiss alpine farms to learn how they function, and what strategies the farmers use to cope. He hopes his findings will help to address farming problems back home. The trip was organised by Switzerland's National Centre of Competence in Research NCCR North-South. (Julie Hunt, swissinfo.ch)

Aeschi 2009 - A cow's paradise and the fading of Swiss agriCULTURE
Duration : 75 Seconds

In Aeschi, Switzerland one can find glimpses into a rural community that somewhat resists corporatization. There is one farmer named Ueli that lives that resistance. The hands on approach he takes to farming is evident in the beauty of his farm and in the peaceful nature of his animals. As Switzerland joins other post-industrial nations in producing mega farms, people like Ueli and their small farms are disappearing. Cows with horns too are rapidly becoming a sign of the past. In this time of transition a Swiss herd of cows will have those with and without horns. The horned animals are the oldest and when they are gone, they will be replaced by the ones without horns. De-horning is symbolic of the need to standardize.

Swiss Foundation Offers Low Cost Insurance to Small-scale Farmers in Kenya
Duration : 255 Seconds

In Kenya, small-scale farmers are particularly vulnerable to the vagaries of weather, often losing their entire investment when droughts or floods destroy their crops. Crop insurance is usually too costly for such operations. But a Swiss-based foundation is now offering low cost insurance through a program called "Kilimo Salama," or "safe farming." Cathy Majtenyi reports for VOA from the western Kenyan town of Eldoret.

But before visitors can dive into rural life as it used to be, the staff still have a lot of work to do. In order to make the travel back in time perfect, the old houses have to be refurbished, traditional gardens planted and indigenous cattle trained for farm work. (Michele Andina, swissinfo.ch)

TEDxZurich - Roman Gaus - Urban Farming
Duration : 512 Seconds

Urban agriculture has been real for decades, starting with the industrialization of Western Europe in the 20th century. Urban agriculture has been also well practiced in poor economies such as Cuba, where it serves as an important way of self-reliance. Today, with conventional agriculture "Big Ag" being at a cross-road in terms of its ecological impact on the environment and the increased food demand of a population growing to 9bn people by 2050, urban agriculture may very well be one key of a solution for the 21st century. As Roman explains, urban agriculture offers the solution to grow potentially enough food in the city to feed its entire population. What's more, it also creates healthier, wealthier and happier cities, offering consumers with fresh & quality food choices and access to better quality of life. Roman Gaus, Founder of UrbanFarmers Roman Gaus (32)- from corporate career to social entrepreneur & urban farmer. Roman's story is both fascinating and inspiring. When Roman returned from the States to Switzerland, he left a short but steep career with companies such as Procter & Gamble, Novartis and Franke Group. Yet, he brought with him an emerging concept about inner-city farming, which he had seen take a grass roots approach in US cities. Back in Switzerland, Roman was surprised by the proven, Swiss-engineered technology know-how of Aquaponic; a combination of fish and vegetable farming, ideally suited to grow locally grown & organic food without soil in the ...
