Davos Open Forum 2004 - Religion
Duration : 6566 Seconds

Religion: Does Globalization Bring Salvation or Curse? Some religious communities are very critical of globalization, others are in favour or ask for a "globalization of justice". 1) How do religions judge globalization and deglobalization on the basis of their values? 2) Why and how should the impact of globalization on the poor be measured? 3) Is the global market itself becoming a new "religion"? Davos Open Forum 2009 - Religion and Human Rights
Duration : 6065 Seconds

www.weforum.org 30.01.2009 Davos Open Forum 2009 - Religion and Human Rights A Contradiction? Church and religious communities are often critical voices and successful fighters for the protection of human dignity and human rights. However, religion and human rights are often in contradiction to each other: forced marriages, religiously motivated terrorist attacks and the oppression of people with different religious beliefs are some examples. Moreover, some churches and religious communities still discriminate against women and homosexuals. 1) Why are human rights' violations committed on behalf of religion? 2) Is the increase of religious fundamentalism connected to respect or disrespect of human rights? 3) To what extent is religion used as a pretext for discrimination against women? 4) What is the responsibility of government in the protection of religious identity and freedom of worship, and should governments set limits? This session is co-organized with the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (SEK-FEPS). Davos Open Forum 2008 - The Comeback of Religion
Duration : 5790 Seconds

www.weforum.org 24.01.2008 Open Forum - Welcome & The Comeback of Religion: A Potential Danger for the Secular State? Introducing the Open Forum 2008 WithAndré Schneider, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer, World Economic Forum Thomas Wipf, President of the Council, Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches, Switzerland The Comeback of Religion: A Potential Danger for the Secular State? Secularization was a decisive step towards peaceful cohabitation of different religions in Europe. However, not every religion considers the separation of state and religion as a natural course of action. For example, Islam is a unity between the sacred and profane spaces of society. Thus, Islamic states claim that the state represents Islamic communities and that state law is rooted in religious law. 1) How can states in Europe guarantee religious plurality and freedom while simultaneously maintaining their own way of life and culture embedded in Christian values and traditions? 2) How does Islam see the relationship between state and religion? Are there any repercussions on the cohabitation of different religions in secularized states? 3) Does Islam face a similar question to the one Christians have intensely struggled with since Enlightenment, namely, recognition of a separation of state and religion? Mohammad Khatami, President, Foundation for Dialogue Among Civilizations; President of the Islamic Republic of Iran (1997-2005) Ingrid Mattson, President, Islamic Society of North ...

Swissed-off: Outrage as 'Minaret ban' scandal flares up
Duration : 224 Seconds

The UN human rights chief says Switzerland's minaret ban is discriminatory and puts it on a collision course with international law. This weekend Switzerland held a referendum on banning minarets on mosques. Official results from the poll show a majority support the move. It's the first time a country has voted to curb the religious practices of muslims. It was put forward by the right wing People's Party which argues that minarets are a political symbol. Muslim groups attacked the decision as anti-Islamic. RT's Gayane Chichyakyan went to investigate the case.

Did Swiss show the way? EU vs Atheism vs Religion?
Duration : 586 Seconds

The Swiss referendum on banning minarets was passed by majority of the electors. A Euronews pole said that many Europeans agree with the Swiss. However the EU has been critical of the ban yet the Lisbon Treaty provides for referendums which may allow a vote on banning religious symbols. Will the EU be in the future a secular entity that is concerned with Universal Humans rights or will religious communities be granted specific rights? I give a critique of the conflicts between culture, ethics postmodern scientic methods vs religious faith and if the two views are compatible in Western culture or society.

The Athan Project (Switzerland)
Duration : 414 Seconds

Automated sound boxes broadcasting the Athan were installed by a non-Muslim artist on four important church towers in Switzerland. On July 10, 2007, the boxes, which had been programmed, started to sound the call for prayer from the church towers. - Johannes Gees: I feel that spreading fear among people can only be understood as a lack of trust in the liberal values that matter to me. So I decided to make a statement against those who abuse religion to fight against some of the most important values of our society, such as generosity, tolerance and freedom of religion. Being an artist, I chose the classic artist´s strategy: provocation.

Davos Open Forum 2007 - Religion: Source of Peace or War?
Duration : 5262 Seconds

Religion: Source of Peace or Cause of Violence and War? World religions have always been used for the good, but they have also been misused. Recently, however, the media has linked religious extremism with violence. Religion appears to be increasingly instrumentalized to fuel hate, secure political power and strengthen claims to absolutism. 1) How can religion's potentially peaceful role be strengthened? How can religion be protected from abuse? 2) What are the contributions of places of worship and religious communities? Are they a part of the problem? 3) Can religions be criticized? What are the limits of legitimate criticism? Gret Haller, Senior Lecturer, Johann Wolfgang Goethe - University, Germany Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin, Ireland Farhan A. Nizami, Director, Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, United Kingdom Konrad Raiser, Visiting Professor, Ecumenical Institute of Bossey, Germany Introduced by Shaukat Aziz, Prime Minister of Pakistan Moderated by Bendicht Luginbühl, Journalist, Switzerland

Switzerland: Entry Ban for Peaceful Islamic Preacher (Pierre Vogel)
Duration : 301 Seconds

The Swiss authorities denied entry for an Islamic German preacher: On December 12, 2009 a public rally took place in Bern against agitation against Muslims in the wake of a nationwide vote to ban the construction of minarets. German Islamic preacher Pierre Vogel was invited by the Central Council of Muslims in Switzerland, but was not allowed to enter Switzerland because his presence is considered a danger for public law and order, according to the Federal Migration Office. Pierre Vogel wanted to encourage Muslims in Switzerland to come out of their social isolation and help reduce mistrust. Pierre Vogel's Homepage: www.pierrevogel.de
