Counterterrorist expert and author Michael A. Sheehan spoke onTuesday, Oct. 5, in the Mitchell Auditorium on The College of St. Scholastica campus. The title of his discussion is "Combating Terror with Intelligence." Sheehan's lecture is the first in a new series called Terrorism and Human Rights, sponsored by the Alworth Center for the Study of Peace and Justice at St. Scholastica. The series will explore several sides to the issue of terrorism as terrorist actions and threats increase all over the world. Sheehan is the former New York City Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism. From 1998 to 2001, he was the coordinator for counterterrorism at the US Department of State. In a 2001 interview with "Frontline," he called the Sept. 11 attacks a failure of intelligence and said that the scale of the attack was completely unexpected. Sheehan is a West Point-educated Green Beret. During his time in the military, he served as an officer in the infantry and Special Forces. He had several overseas assignments as a commander of a counter-terrorism unit in Panama, a counterinsurgency advisor in El Salvador, and an infantry company commander in Korea. He also served on peacekeeping duty in Somalia and Haiti. While on active duty, Sheehan served in the White House on the National Security Council staff for Presidents George HW Bush and Bill Clinton. The US continues to harbor one of the CIA's most infamous agents in Miami, Florida. Luis Posada-Carriles, a former CIA agent, has been convicted and implicated in terrorist attacks throughout Latin America. Congress failed to pass a resolution in 2007 to brand Posada-Carriles as a terrorist and hold him accountable for his countless violent acts. Posada is now standing trial in El Paso, Texas, but it is not for international terrorism charges.

with recent anti Muslim hysteria and fear people concerned about Islamic terrorism should move from emotion and sensationalism and use cold hard facts and stats there seems to be a movement among some extremist politicians to imply that there is some significant number of Muslim terrorists or that this is some threat to America if we look at the solid numbers they may be surprising how many muslim terrorists have there been? by my count somewhere under 450 in the last 40 years 19 on 9-11 of course the others in the bali bombing, indonesia some indients in india in a couple times in the last 10 years al qaida attacked saudi arabia there were some hijackers in the 80s and of course we can go back to the 1972 munich olympics-- add all these people together its about 450 but muslim haters cant beleive its a number so small of course, one muslim hate site has a much higher estimate-- they took all the above attacks from 9-11 on- added ALL attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan -- it is of course very unusual to call people in a way terrorists- they would not likely have called the ZVeit cong terrorists or people in panama or grenada -- its especially odd if we invaded them the brand "islamic" terrorist also assumes that the reason for the violence is religion-- in some cases it is, even in the case of al qaudia thier goals are stated to remove us troops, stop us support of israel and kill the saudi leaders -- in iraq and afghanistan -- im betting that at least one of those attacks ...

The bank was run by a Pakistani, working with Persian Gulf managers who operated through a network of secret offshore centers to hide their operations from the world's bank examiners.
