| Drawing the Line at the Big Ditch: The Panama Canal Treaties and the Rise of the Right Duration : 3776 Seconds Political events in the United States often have unintended consequences for American politics and for the country as a whole. The long-term consequences of the Panama Canal debates of the 1970s was examined by Adam Clymer, former chief Washington correspondent for the New York Times, who discussed his book, "Drawing the Line at the Big Ditch: The Panama Canal Treaties and the Rise of the Right." Considered one of America's engineering marvels, the Panama Canal sparked intense debates in the 1970s over the decision to turn it over to Panama. Clymer showed how the decision to give up this monument of the "American Century" stirred emotions already rubbed raw by the loss of the Vietnam War and shaped American politics for years. Jimmy Carter made the Panama Canal his first foreign-policy priority and won the battle to ratify the treaties. However, the author revealed, the issue gave Ronald Reagan a slogan that kept his 1976 candidacy alive and positioned him to win in 1980, helped elect conservative senators and create a Republican majority, and fueled the overall growth of conservatism. Clymer's narrative illuminates many aspects of American politics during the Ford and Carter years, offers insight into the "Reagan Revolution" and highlights an overlooked turning point in American political history. Speaker Biography: Adam Clymer is author of "Edward M. Kennedy: A Biography" and co-author of "The Swing Voter in American Politics" and "Ronald Reagan: The Man, The President ... | | Are you Living in a Banana Republic? Duration : 607 Seconds I don't want to get to political, but it feels to me that the United States has turned itself into a Banana Republic. A place were corporations rule the land. The government doesn't care about individuals, they don't know who you are or what you care about. But you can bet your ass they know, and care what the corporations want. When a business can give an unlimited amount of money to a politician it's a recipe for disaster. It's a lesson that 3rd world countries figured out a long time ago. Panama has passed laws that will deport any expatriate who donates to a political party. They have seen first hand how bad things can get. So why is this a lesson that the United States continues to struggle with? | | Obama: Is he a citizen? Duration : 85 Seconds A McCain supporter described Barack Obama as "non-citizen" and asked the media to look into his citizenship. Obama was born in Hawaii, a US state, on August 4, 1961 and is indeed a US citizen. McCain, however, was born in the Panama Canal Zone and has been the subject of constitutional debate around the definition of "natural born citizen." Filmed by Chuck Olsen in Lakeville, MN. | | The Panama Deception - A Must Watch Documentary Short! (Operation Just Cause) Duration : 1328 Seconds This is an obvious example of American public relations (propaganda) distorting facts, using the 'fourth branch of the government" (the media) to muster, persuade, and slant public opinion and public knowledge. The bias and one sided broadcasting of information is discussed in the documentary. This film is also an excellent bridge to the Iran-Contra 'CIA drug running,' the Persian Gulf War and America's foreign policies. Panama is not the only nation abused by the American Empire's policies... do the research if you really want to know what kind of nation you are supporting and the kind of nation you are being identified with. There is a reason why a large majority of the world hates America. But to the rest of the world... Propaganda and mis/disinformation campaigns coupled with illogical educational practices and materials in the federally funded school systems, reinforced with mass media's entanglement of socialization, strip and rob the people of the familial transmission of social standards and cultural knowledge. It could be argued that the US carefully teaches its young students what to think and not how to think through illogical testing practices, questionable teaching materials, and the students' age relevant to the materials/subject being taught, in public schools (federally funded schools). Because Americans have been let down and miseducated by their country, a large majority of parents do not teach their children to vote or to be politically aware and active ... | | Willie Colon ft. Hector Lavoe - La Murga de Panama Duration : 330 Seconds Hector Lavoe (September 30, 1946 -- June 29, 1993) joined Willie Colón's band in 1967 and performed as the band vocalist. Pacheco, co-owner of Fania Records and it's recording musical director, suggested that Colón record Lavoe on a track of Colón's first album El Malo. Given the good results, Colón had Lavoe record the rest of the album's vocal tracks. Willie never officially asked Lavoe to join his band, but after the recording, Willie said to him, "On Saturday we start at 10 pm at El Tropicoro Club." With the Willie Colón band, Lavoe recorded several hit songs, including "El malo" and "Canto a Borinquen". The success significantly transformed both Colón's and Lavoe's lives. Colón's band featured a raw, aggressive all-trombone sound that was well received by salsa fans, and Lavoe complemented the style with his articulate voice, talent for improvisation, and sense of humor. Héctor received instant recognition, steady work and enough money to provide him with a comfortable lifestyle. According to Lavoe, it happened so fast he did not know how to cope with the sudden success. While working with the Willie Colón band, Lavoe became addicted to drugs and began to habitually be late when scheduled to perform with the band. Colón eventually decided to not work with Hector on stage but they still remained good friends and made music in the studio together. | | The Army's Jungle Warfare Training Center In Panama Duration : 1680 Seconds *to be updated at a later date* This movie shows more then Latin America, for those interested specifically in the jungle warfare center, it can be located near the last third of the film. This station has been a major problem politically. The Nation of panama's history of colonization (some of it willing) and struggle; America's involvement with Panama with America's backing of the Panama's 1000 day war, eventual courtship leading to American colonization which gave birth to the Panama Canal and the jungle warfare training center. Panama, like much of Latin America, does not enjoy the fact that America owns and operates a facility of this nature for its obvious symbolism and implication. This, coupled with Panama's desire to remove control of the man-made marvel (Panama Canal) from foreign control, putting the canal back in control of the sovereign nation of Panama, has made for some very questionable actions discussed in the movie 'The Panama Deception' (www.youtube.com by the American 'occupiers.' | | Infinity Panama Canal Duration : 556 Seconds This 9 minute video covers the Northbound (Pacific to Atlantic, ie west to east) transit of the Panama Canal aboard Celebrity Cruise Line's Infinity. (The canal actually runs north and south, even though ships are sailing East to West or vice versa). This transit was part of a 14 night re-positioning cruise from Valparaiso, Chile to Ft. Lauderdale. We had an Aft-facing balcony cabin, which added to the excitement of the transit. The transit took about 12 hours, and by afternoon many guests were entertaining in the 'Aft-Club' cabins. Quite a beautiful day! In the opening scene a book is show laying on the balcony table called 'The Path Between the Seas', which is a must-read for anyone sailing through it. The book covers the history, challenges, politics, and media coverage of the day - quite a fascinating look at this modern day marvel. It really made the significance of the passage even more amazing. There are also a couple scenes showing Panama Hats, which were purchased at the previous stop of Manata Ecuador, which is famous for these hats that are shipped worldwide.
