El Caño archaeology site in Panama
Duration : 339 Seconds

El Caño is one of Panama's most important archaeological sites. Unfortunatly many important and well preserved artifacts were plundered from Panama by an American (typical) archaeologist and sold to different museums around the world. The UN has sanctions against this type of activity today, but in the 1920's when it happened there were no such laws. It is unlikely that Panama will ever recover these treasures. I was trying to learn about the place, but couldn't concentrate on anything because of all the mosquitoes. Luckily my wife Lidia was there to make sense of my random outbursts. Maybe I can get her to add some info to the wikipedia page as it's looking pretty bare. en.wikipedia.org

Waitt Expedition: The Rio Chagres
Duration : 133 Seconds

Join us on Facebook: www.facebook.com More about the Waitt Institute: wid.waittinstitute.org More about the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) www.inadiscover.com More about the Instituto Nacional de Cultura de Panama (INAC) www.inac.gob.pa The Waitt Institute partnered with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) and the Instituto Nacional de Cultura de Panama (INAC) in 2008 for this exploratory survey of the mouth of the Rio Chagres. The survey identified a number of submerged cultural resources, including a shipwreck site possibly associated with Henry Morgans 1671 attack on Panamá, and other shipwrecks associated with 18th and 19th century activity at the site. Cultural remains from the 1740 attack and destruction of the Castillo de San Lorenzo by British Admiral Edward Vernon, and submerged remains associated with the settlement of Chagres (ca. 1680-1915), in particular from the period of the California Gold Rush (1849-1855) were also located. The submerged cultural resources of the mouth of the Río Chagres, as a collective group of sites and remains, form a significant maritime cultural landscape along with the site of Chagres and the Castillo de San Lorenzo. This maritime cultural landscape also includes the natural resources of the area, such as the Morro or Peñon on which the Castillo rests, the sandbars and beaches at the rivers entrance, Lajas Ref, and the rivers channel itself all of which influenced and were impacted by the human activities that have ...

Collecting Ancient Central America:: Museums, Explorers, & Archaeologists in Pursuit of the Past
Duration : 5927 Seconds

Starting in the late 19th century, travelers, amateur scientists, businessmen, politicians, and later, professional archaeologists returned from Central America with never-before-seen artifacts. Many of these ceramic, stone, gold, and jade objects ended up in museums and many entered private collections. Regardless of their final destination, these early collections have helped, and continue to help, define a unique and unparalleled ancient history of Central America. This symposium delves into this history by looking at both early antiquarians and more recent scholarly approaches to collecting and understanding the past. It focuses on individuals, institutions, and the social and political factors that have impacted the collecting of objects from Belize and Guatemala in the north, down to Panama in the south. By extension, this conversation is also about understanding the history of archaeology, the history of museum building, and how we construct the past. Featured scholars include Dr. John Hoopes (University of Kansas), Dr. Francisco Corrales (National Museum of Costa Rica), Dr. Rosemary Joyce (University of California, Berkeley), Luis Sánchez (Department of Environmental Management, Costa Rican Institute of Electricity), Dr. James Snead (California State University Northridge), Dr. Elin Danien (University of Pennsylvania), and Dr. Alexander Benitez (George Mason University).

Sub Marine Explorer
Duration : 159 Seconds

The Sub Marine Explorer was built in New York by Julius Kroehl in the mid-1800s. Kroehl brought his invention to Panama's pearl islands for pearl fishing, but the craft was technically flawed, giving its occupants the "bends" or decompression sickness. It was abandoned near shore in 1865 and was rediscovered in 2001 by archaeologist Dr. James Delgado. In 2008, the Waitt Institute partnered with Dr. Delgado, the Institute of Nautical Archaeology and the Instituto Nacional de Cultura de Panama to complete documentation of the sub before the tides erode its hull into the sea.

America's Lost Submarine
Duration : 2793 Seconds

The rusted out remains of a beached submarine could be the find of a lifetime for maritime archaeologist James Delgado. A vacation along Panama's Pearl Islands led archaeologist James Delgado to an astounding discovery, the world's first working submarine, rusting on a remote beach, forgotten for over 135 years. We follow Delgado as he uncovers the mystery surrounding this maritime treasure. How did the vessel work, what killed its inventor and crew, and why did it end up here in this deserted archipelago? We also trace the amazing life of German engineer Julius Kroehl and how he invented a diving craft that was half a century ahead of its time.

Parallax Film Productions follows the groundbreaking underwater expedition to uncover this mysterious Sen Toku submarine fleet and reveal a new chapter in history. Days after their attack on Pearl Harbor, Admiral Yamamoto and his military commanders realize they have provoked the US into joining the war and are likely targets for American retaliation. They quickly mobilize to build a secret super fleet of submarines. Sen Toku: search for Japan's Ghost Fleet follows as Texas A&M University marine archaeologist Brett Phaneuf tries to locate these legendary subs. Phaneuf and his team travel to Japan where 24 World War II submarines were scuttled, doomed to a watery grave. Working from 60- year-old declassified US naval photos, ocean sonar and GPS navigation, and ROVs (remotely operated vehicles), Phaneuf's crew -- the first to survey these shipwrecks -- discover details of World ...

Spa and Hotel in Cocle, Panama
Duration : 30 Seconds

Pre-Columbian Coclé During pre-Columbian times, the area of Panama which today includes Coclé province had a number of identifiable native cultures. Archaeologists have loosely designated these cultures by pottery style. The poorly studied La Mula period ranged from 150 BC to AD 300. It was followed by the Tonosi period, from AD 300 to AD 550, and by the Cubita period, from AD 550 to AD 700. A unified Native American culture appears to have flourished in this area from approximately 1200 BC until the 16th century. Turtle pendant, Playa de Venado, 500-1300 CE, shell, Dumbarton Oaks Museum, Washington, DCArchaeologists working at intervals since the 1920s have uncovered ruins and burials which contain striking artifacts. These include worked gold and other metals, carved bone, shell and whale ivory, textiles, jewelry with semi-precious stones and pottery. Coclé gold work was traded throughout the region, and has been found as far away as Chichen Itza in Yucatán. The large collection of Coclé pre-historic pottery is notable for strong structural design and the use of fish, bird, animal and human figures as decoration. In the 1920s, at least one major archaeological site, Sitio Conte, was so badly damaged by an unprofessional excavator that much of its history is lost. In the 1930s and 1940, Sitio Conte was extensively excavated by Harvard archaeologist Samuel K. Lothrop and University of Pennsylvania archaeologist J. Alden Mason, each of whom published their findings. A ...

CEO Artist - Mark Nelson's "White Cargo" 1987
Duration : 266 Seconds

Originally filmed on Super8mm film, this work has been digitally re-mastered for online access. Mark Nelson's exploration with archeology and cultural myths was realized in this short with the help of two fellow artists friends, Kellerman a painter and Maszk a printmaker who improvised their roles under Nelson's direction. Nelson's preoccupation with archeology can be traced back to his youth excavating in the jungles and old town sites hidden in the Isthmus of Panama.
