| | Helen Clark Visit to Niger Duration : 140 Seconds United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark and United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (OCHA) Valerie Amos arrived today in Niamey for a joint two-day visit to draw attention to the looming food and nutrition crisis in Niger and in the Sahel region. One third of Nigeriens suffer from food insecurity and 330000 children under five are at risk of severe acute malnutrition because of last year's poor harvest and high food prices. More than one million children under five are at risk in the region. "We know what is coming, and we know what to do to save lives. While we cannot stop this crisis from taking place, we are taking steps to avert a catastrophe. Across the Sahel region, international agencies have called for more than US $724 million to support national efforts to respond to the crisis. To date, donors have provided $135 million, and relief activities have already begun. But we need more resources now to prevent a large-scale crisis," said Valerie Amos. The joint mission aims to build the foundations of an integrated regional approach between emergency and development activities to help people in the region adjust to climate and other environmental changes and to strengthen their resilience and livelihood in the longer term. "While we cannot control droughts, we can control famine," said Helen Clark. "The humanitarian response must bridge to long-term development if Niger is to build ... | | SAHEL, THE WOUNDED FRONTIER: DJIBOUTI Duration : 3097 Seconds In spite of the dryness and hopeless view, the Sahara is a territory of immense open lands in which life beats, irrigated by the rivers Senegal, Niger and Nile. Over the centuries, incredible civilizations have emerged here and black and white people, Coptic, Christian, Jews and Muslims, nomadic shepherds, fishermen and sedentary farmers have all cohabited. We travel across this land to narrate the stories of the men and women at Sahel, their trials for survival at the verge of desertification and the falling of their ancestral way of life. | | Transmigrations - A journey of thousands of kilometres along the trans-Sahara route towards Libya. Duration : 466 Seconds Since the beginning of 2009 about 8000 migrants have crossed the Ténéré Desert each month in a bid to reach Europe and in particular Italy. This is the heaviest flow in the last 6 years and not even the war for uranium between the MNJ rebels and the Niger government, which began in spring 2007, has been able to staunch it. The migrants, who originate in the western African countries, travel to Niger by whatever means they happen upon, abandoning their home villages, with the economic support of their entire families, and leaving behind them situations of economic and social difficulty often caused by controversial western influences of both political and economic nature. Some of them stop off along the way to work and earn the money necessary to reach Dirkou, the last oasis in Niger and departure point for Libya. The great majority of them will actually succeed in setting off on the next leg of the journey, but those left penniless will remain "stranded", trapped in Dirkou for a long time. They call themselves stranded and thus identify themselves amongst those unable to continue the journey. Some just do not have enough money, others have been robbed, yet others have miscalculated the racket money due at the checkpoints; for them the only hope of being able to move on eventually lies in working for a master until such time as he sees fit to pay them. For this reason they will adapt to doing any kind of work, but for some the idea of being exploited, inferior and ...
