It started as a "what if?" conversation while cruising down I-75 through the Midwest. That turned into a "why not?" mentality. That mentality ultimately turned into the sentiment of "I'd like to withdrawal money for two plane tickets to Nicaragua!" So... "what if"...we told stories of people using their love of travel as a catalyst for volunteering? To answer our own question we departed for El Pantenal, Nicaragua, a barrio just outside the city of Granada. It was here that we witnessed 3 amazing people giving their time and effort, trying to empower children through education. This is their story. By the end of the week we had answered our own "what ifs?" It is estimated that 30 percent of Nicaragua's 1.7 million children are child labourers, beggars or are involved in criminal activities, including prostitution and drug abuse and trafficking. Since 2007, the Bible Society of Nicaragua and its partners have been working to help change these children's lives. They aim to distribute more than 300000 Scriptures to disadvantaged children and help get them back into schools and churches. The Bible Society is also reaching out to children in hospitals.

FDEGL is a nonprofit founded in 1989 to serve Nicaragua's youth and peasant population through the development of projects such as sustainable agriculture, women's empowerment and drug-use prevention, among others. FDEGL's goal is to improve the living and working conditions of the most vulnerable sectors of the Nicaraguan society and to reduce poverty, hunger and unemployment rates. FDEGL has supported children and teenagers from poor families in different districts by funding and developing athletic and cultural activities. FDEGL has also worked with young drug users in rehabilitation centers and has been successful in integrating them into school districts and keeping them drug free. This project is championed by Gene and Fran Murphy who live in Florida.

17 students from the University of Rhode Island's Newman Club and Father Matthew Glover, the Chaplain/Director of The Catholic Center, embarked on a mission trip to Nicaragua. The students worked with disabled and abandoned children in Diriamba at an orphanage run by Mustard Seed Communities, a Roman Catholic organization dedicated to caring, sharing and training, and uplifting the most vulnerable members of society. On December 17, Nicaraguan TV Channel 8 viewers learned about US society and traditions through a one-hour special on the US Arranged by the Office of Public Affairs, the special included interviews with Ambassador Callahan on US values, Thanksgiving, sports, and other topics; a chili cooking demonstration from the Economic Counselor; a traditional Thanksgiving dinner at the Public Affairs Officer's house; and interviews with Embassy personnel, demonstrating US ethnic and cultural diversity. The special showed that Americans are united by their traditions, their optimism toward the future and by their belief in freedom and opportunity for all.

The first experiment for the boys of Masaya, Nicaragua. This lesson was adapted from Operation Chemistry, sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS). The experiment can also be done with a plastic bag full of water. There are a few things that aren't completely accurate in this explanation and would take a more detailed and thorough description of the underlying chemistry. The reason a sharp, lubricated point can be pushed through the strands at the tie and nipple ends because the polymer chains will stretch around the skewer. You are less likely to be successful were the chains have already been stretched by the air in the ballon. (not because of thickness)
