This clip describes the birth of a new sign language (Idioma de señas de Nicaragua) in Nicaragua in the 1970s. Coming together for the first time at the formation of a new deaf school in 1977, deaf individuals across Nicaragua used the home signs that they knew to create a sign language pidgin that evolved into a fully formed sign language by the young children who were still within the critical period. This clip is from a longer NOVA documentary called "Evolution: The Mind's Big Bang" (Narrated by Liam Neeson).

In January 2012, UNESCO held a workshop in Managua, Nicaragua with the aim of working with Mayangna teachers and bilingual education professionals to improve the quality of mother-tongue education that Mayangna children receive. In particular, teachers were introduced to pilot versions of classroom materials in Mayangna language, based on the UNESCO publication, "Mayangna Knowledge of the Interdependence of People and Nature: Fish and Turtles" and developed by a team of Mayangna education professionals together with UNESCO and Nicaragua's Ministry of Education. In this audio slideshow, a Mayangna linguist with a background in mother-tongue education and a Mayangna teacher talk about the importance of Mother Tongue education for them, their students and their communities.

UConn psychology professor Maria Coppola conducts research into the unique homesign systems used by deaf individuals in remote areas of Nicaragua who do not have access to a conventional sign language. The Nicaraguan individuals Coppola studies are unique in that they were raised in areas that are extremely isolated and had to invent their own sign language, which was shared only among their immediate family and friends. Ten Weaver High School students, along with two of their teachers, successfully completed their leadership training program (Summer 2008) on the Nicaraguan island of Ometepe, a volcanic island in the middle of the world's largest tropical lake.
