In January 2012, UNESCO held a workshop in Managua, Nicaragua with the aim of working with Mayangna teachers and bilingual education professionals to improve the quality of mother-tongue education that Mayangna children receive. In particular, teachers were introduced to pilot versions of classroom materials in Mayangna language, based on the UNESCO publication, "Mayangna Knowledge of the Interdependence of People and Nature: Fish and Turtles" and developed by a team of Mayangna education professionals together with UNESCO and Nicaragua's Ministry of Education. In this audio slideshow, a Mayangna linguist with a background in mother-tongue education and a Mayangna teacher talk about the importance of Mother Tongue education for them, their students and their communities.

PLACE is an establishment of Foundation for the Autonomy and Development of the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua (FADCANIC). Its Annual Cultural Revitalization Program is a collaborative effort of the people of Pearl Lagoon, Haulover, Awas and Raitipura and local, national and international volunteer facilitators and partner organizations. PLACE's Cultural Revitalization Program provides community members of all ages, free access to a wide array of technical, academic, artistic and life skills courses that address the growing development and workforce demands of business and industries in the local area. This video presents participants of the 2012 Popular Guitar Course. It is the first of series covering the variety of courses that the Cultural Revitalization Program delivered this year. The video is in Caribbean Nicaragua Creole English and features singing in the Miskito language.

In Nicaragua, rainfall has declined. During periods of little rainfall, farmers have to rely on well water and expensive irrigation pumps. Solar energy could be a solution. Climate change has caused rainfall to decline in Nicaragua, which has an effect on farming. Now a German teacher has joined with a Nicaraguan to help make solar-powered irrigation pumps available to farmers. It's a worthwhile investment because solar-powered irrigation systems are cheaper over the long run.

In 1991 Nuri Akbar interviewed Nicaraguan congressman Hon Ray Hooker who was on an official visit to Los Angeles. Mr Hooker represented the Blue Fields region on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua that hold close historical and cultural ties to the nation of Belize. Topic covered included migration, history, culture, and the relationship of the black population to the Sandinista revolution. Current Social/political challenge and the unique history of the English speaking black people who settled in the blue fields area of Nicaragua.
