The Nicaraguan National Zoo is busy caring for the latest additions to the park: two three-week-old female jaguar cubs "Limi" and "Bulni". The cubs were rescued from a jungle on Nicaragua's Caribbean coast after their mother was killed when she entered a house and tried to catch a pig. They join a host of other animals at the zoo just south of Managua which is actively working to fight illegal animal trafficking and save endangered species, including the jaguar. Duration: 00:48

After decades of decline and without a documented sighting for over 15 years, it was thought that jaguars were extinct in western Nicaragua. Thanks to the camera traps set up by Paso Pacifico intern Robert Alexander Euwe, a graduate student in wildlife management, the male jaguar caught here busted that myth in 2010. Dozens of dogs dressed to the nines celebrated mass in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua on Sunday (March 25), an annual ritual where the owners pray for their pets to be cured or avoid illness. Crowds of Catholics, carrying their pets or leading them on leashes, waited for their pampered pooches to be passed by a statue of Saint Lazarus. The colourful church procession is believed to have evolved from a combination of two different biblical characters. The first Lazarus was the man brought back from the dead by Jesus, with the second Lazarus a character in a parable, a poor man who wished to eat the crumbs from a rich man's table but was left to suffer, with only a dog to lick his sores. In this distinctively Nicaraguan celebration, dogs are given a special place with the saint revered for his closeness to animals, and the miracles he works over the year on their behalf. Locals say the tradition goes back to the colonial period after the Spanish conquest when Catholicism was introduced to the Central American nation.

La casa de la directora de un zoológico de Nicaragua se ha convertido en un 'orfanato' para las crías huérfanas de animales en peligro de extinción. Sus nuevas 'pupilas' son dos cachorras de jaguar. La madre de las pequeñas fue asesinada por un campesino cuando entró a un corral para cazar un cerdo. Unos misioneros encontraron a las crías en la remota comunidad indígena de Tronquera, en el Caribe norte. Para salvar a los jaguares de las manos de los traficantes de animales --en el mercado negro podrían ofrecerse hasta 10.000 dólares por cada cachorro- los misioneros pidieron ayuda al Zoológico Nacional de Masaya, no lejos de la capital nicaragüense. Mientras sean pequeñas, las cachorras permanecerán en la casa de la directora del zoológico, Marina Argüello. Ahora Bulni (que significa 'mancha' en lengua indígena de la zona) y Limi (tigre) están bajo el control de los especialistas, alimentadas con biberón. Pero cuando crezcan un poco más, serán trasladadas al zoológico que cuenta con un refugio de rehabilitación.
