The Cathedral of León, also known as the 'Real e Insigne Basilica Catedral de la Asuncion de la Bienaventurada Virgen Maria' (Royal and Distinguished Basilica Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is a significantly important and historic landmark in Nicaragua. The Cathedral was awarded World Heritage Site status with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The site's nomination is Nicaragua's third cultural landmark, following the ruins of León Viejo and El Güegüense . The Cathedral's construction lasted between 1747 and 1814 and was consecrated by Pope Pius IX in 1860. Since then, the cathedral of León has maintained the status of being the largest cathedral in Central America and one of the most known in the Americas due to its Baroque style of architecture. The architectural design was carried out by the Guatemalan architect Diego José of Porres and Esquivel. The cathedral is distinguished for having a rectangular plant, of a type generalized in those centuries and similar to those of the cathedrals of Lima and Cuzco, Peru. The towers and the facade belong to the neoclassicist style. It has five naves, ten arched tracts, two towers in its facade and a chapel. The sacrarium is located almost parallel to the biggest altar whose salient breaks the rectangular symmetry. In 1991 Nuri Akbar interviewed Nicaraguan congressman Hon Ray Hooker who was on an official visit to Los Angeles. Mr Hooker represented the Blue Fields region on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua that hold close historical and cultural ties to the nation of Belize. Topic covered included migration, history, culture, and the relationship of the black population to the Sandinista revolution. Current Social/political challenge and the unique history of the English speaking black people who settled in the blue fields area of Nicaragua.

Nicaragua's general elections are scheduled for November 11, and incumbent President Daniel Ortega, hopes to stay in power with the help of his wife and eight children, who control many of the country's media. President Ortega is a controversial figure in Nicaragua's history. His first period in office from 1985-1990 was characterized by land reform and wealth redistribution, hostility from the United States' Reagan administration and attacks by the US-backed Contras. If elected, this would be Ortega's third term in office.

The African descended population of the countries of Central America, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. One group was delivered largely in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to work in mines on the Pacific site of the area, and most lost their specific African identity over time and through custom. Their present day descendants speak Spanish. The other group had more diverse origins, but often had connections with England. One group arrived with a shipwrecked slave ship in the seventeenth century, the Miskito Sambu, another group were brought by English settlers on the Mosquito Coast and in Belize, a third group arrived from the island of St Vincent, deported by the English in 1797, the Garifuna, and another came in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries from Jamaica, the Bay Islands, Cayman Islands and occasionally other English Caribbean colonies through labor schemes of the large American transportation and fruit growing concerns.

Feb 6, 1911:, President Ronald Wilson Reagan is born in Tampico, Illinois. Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, served for two terms from 1981 to 1989. Known as The Great Communicator, he was the first actor to be elected president after two centuries of mainly lawyers and soldiers. Reagan delivered a rousing speech in support of presidential candidate Barry Goldwater at the Republican National Convention in 1964, which in effect launched his political career. After two terms as governor of California, he made a bid for the Republican presidential ticket in 1976, losing to Vice President Gerald Ford. In 1980, he gained the nomination and beat out embattled Democratic incumbent Jimmy Carter to become president, ushering in a new era of conservatism in American politics. Reagan possessed an uncanny ability to simultaneously project toughness, humility and affability. He survived an assassination attempt just weeks into his first term and bounced back with vigor, retaining his sense of humor. An immensely popular and influential leader, Reagan's administration was notable for freeing American hostages taken captive in Iran during Carter's term and for resurrecting a no-nonsense image of American strength abroad.
