The Cathedral of León, also known as the 'Real e Insigne Basilica Catedral de la Asuncion de la Bienaventurada Virgen Maria' (Royal and Distinguished Basilica Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is a significantly important and historic landmark in Nicaragua. The Cathedral was awarded World Heritage Site status with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The site's nomination is Nicaragua's third cultural landmark, following the ruins of León Viejo and El Güegüense . The Cathedral's construction lasted between 1747 and 1814 and was consecrated by Pope Pius IX in 1860. Since then, the cathedral of León has maintained the status of being the largest cathedral in Central America and one of the most known in the Americas due to its Baroque style of architecture. The architectural design was carried out by the Guatemalan architect Diego José of Porres and Esquivel. The cathedral is distinguished for having a rectangular plant, of a type generalized in those centuries and similar to those of the cathedrals of Lima and Cuzco, Peru. The towers and the facade belong to the neoclassicist style. It has five naves, ten arched tracts, two towers in its facade and a chapel. The sacrarium is located almost parallel to the biggest altar whose salient breaks the rectangular symmetry. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 2 Commissioner Tony Ortiz and the City of Orlando hosted the 5th annual City of Orlando Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff on Thursday, September 15, to celebrate the influence of Hispanic culture in Orlando. This free event celebrated the commencement of Hispanic Heritage month which runs from September 15 to October 15, 2011. It honors the culture and traditions of US residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of the Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The starting date coincides with the anniversary of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua declaring their independence in 1821.

The African descended population of the countries of Central America, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. One group was delivered largely in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to work in mines on the Pacific site of the area, and most lost their specific African identity over time and through custom. Their present day descendants speak Spanish. The other group had more diverse origins, but often had connections with England. One group arrived with a shipwrecked slave ship in the seventeenth century, the Miskito Sambu, another group were brought by English settlers on the Mosquito Coast and in Belize, a third group arrived from the island of St Vincent, deported by the English in 1797, the Garifuna, and another came in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries from Jamaica, the Bay Islands, Cayman Islands and occasionally other English Caribbean colonies through labor schemes of the large American transportation and fruit growing concerns.

One of my favorite songs in any genre. Sabiá was a US-based folk group that performed mostly in Spanish, whose lyrical themes generally were supportive of popular resistance to imperialism in Latin America. Composed mostly of women, many of its members--including singers--had no Latin American family heritage. This particular song is about the women of the Sandinista movement in Nicaragua, which held state power during the 1980s. LYRICS: Mujer Sandinista, trabajadora incansable. On September 15th 1821, the countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua celebrated their independence. Since then, this date has been chosen as the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. And every September 15th to October 15th, the United States recognizes the contributions of Hispanic Americans by commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month. This was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. WLRN is also commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month by premiering a brand new documentary titled Los 100 Sones Cubanos, which shines a new light into one of Cuba's most popular music genres: Son. "Son" is an Afro-Cuban music genre which refers to both a singing and dancing style that has a call-and-response pattern based on African tradition. It is said to be the foundation of what we know today as Salsa. There are traces of "Son" from as early as the 16th century because these played a function on telling the news of the countryside of the time. Los 100 Sones Cubanos explores the 100 most popular Sones of Cuba told by the Cuban people. Tune in this September 18th at 7p.m. and September 25th at 7 pm, during Hispanic Heritage Month, and catch Los 100 Sones Cubanos on Channel 17 WLRN TV PBS For South Florida.
