Thanks to Couchsurfing I met Dalene, Katendi, and Phillip while traveling in Windhoek, Namibia. They drove me all over the city, fed me kapanna, took me to a shabeen (small pub), and sang country music to me (Kenny Rogers, to be precise).

Fascinating open air food market. in the Katatura district of Windhoek (People in Namibia are quite ingenious in finding ways to make money in order to survive. Many people sell colorful stones, belts, offer to look after your car, wash cars, sell fruit and vegetables, hire out illegally copied videos, prostitution (although it is illegal in Namibia) etc. Around Tsumeb very many men and women are employed as security guards (dressed up in uniform). Not that they were necessary but they were paid so poorly you had to have them. I pitied the night guards who had to guard the mines 30 klms out of town on their own. They must have heard plenty of spooky noises in the night!! (I suppose that's why their uniforms were khaki colored )

Windhoek is very much a "Western" style city. My happiest memory is of eating in a raised sidewalk cafe which sold delightful light meals, deserts (pancakes, ice cream with maple syrup!) and ice cold drinks. While savoring my meal I watched the passing parade. Windhoek's sidewalk cafes are a special feature where traditional Namibian meals can be served with wines or draught beer. There is a wide range of restaurants, including German, French, Korean, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Portuguese and Chinese cuisine.

Travelling in Namibia in order to see more than the typical tourist goals, means a lot of "Off Road" driving. Dangers vary from getting stuck by sand or mud, when crossing rivers to loosing the motor oil by stones destroying the crankcase. Water and food supplies will be soon exhausted in such a case and of course, there is no telephone connection in these areas. The driver needs a rapid abilty to react with both hands and feet, but also the outside navigator needs at least 4 hands if he wants to combine puting the right stones in the right holes of the track, pointing to the driver, shooting a film and preventing the man-eating flies from landing in his nose and ears.

The African Spear dancers performing at OXFAM's GROW launch in Johannesburg, South Africa. The dance draws on Southern African indigenous knowledge systems and emphasises the role of food in culture. The dancers incorporate folk lore from Botswana and Nambia, and draw on the Khoi San traditions of dance. The dance tells the story of the hunt for food, with dancers taking on roles of various animals.
