Panoramic view of Windhoek city. With camera slung around my neck and peaked cap I must have looked very "touristy". It was almost embarrassing when 20+ taxis would toot at the same time trying to get me to use their cab. I am not sure but I think anyone with a car can set themselves up as a taxi driver - certainly cars i travelled in were old, noisy and almost certainly un-roadworthy. These vehicles do not have meters so keep in mind that some unscrupulous drivers could charge a tourist ten times the normal fare. There are also the registered radio taxis (Airport shuttle) which are roadworthy and driven responsibly. Be aware there are privately owned buses connecting Windhoek with major regional towns. These buses are invariably un-roadworthy, overloaded and driven well over the speed limit. Roll-overs and collisions with animals are common and often result in multiple fatalities. Always use the Intercape Mainliners. This is not an advertisement- just common sense

I head along the N7 from Cape Town (South Africa) to Namibia in my long-term 2011 Toyota Hilux Xtra Cab D-4D test car. It is long video, but so is the 1 500 km road to Windhoek!

Fascinating open air food market. in the Katatura district of Windhoek (People in Namibia are quite ingenious in finding ways to make money in order to survive. Many people sell colorful stones, belts, offer to look after your car, wash cars, sell fruit and vegetables, hire out illegally copied videos, prostitution (although it is illegal in Namibia) etc. Around Tsumeb very many men and women are employed as security guards (dressed up in uniform). Not that they were necessary but they were paid so poorly you had to have them. I pitied the night guards who had to guard the mines 30 klms out of town on their own. They must have heard plenty of spooky noises in the night!! (I suppose that's why their uniforms were khaki colored )

I drove this Freightliner for a more than a year. The video is compiled from photos taken in South Africa and Namibia. I gave the truck a "repaint" as I didn't like all the stickers on it. Some Namibian bakeries use cement for baking bread. They support dentists.... lol. Johan

Travelling in Namibia in order to see more than the typical tourist goals, means a lot of "Off Road" driving. Dangers vary from getting stuck by sand or mud, when crossing rivers to loosing the motor oil by stones destroying the crankcase. Water and food supplies will be soon exhausted in such a case and of course, there is no telephone connection in these areas. The driver needs a rapid abilty to react with both hands and feet, but also the outside navigator needs at least 4 hands if he wants to combine puting the right stones in the right holes of the track, pointing to the driver, shooting a film and preventing the man-eating flies from landing in his nose and ears. Nevertheless, at the end the tires were gone, but the car is still largely intact, which is not the case for all cars as can be seen in the last pictures.

The classic car owned and restored by a Kenyan, Diccon Wilcock was among a fleet of other vintage cars that were entered in the annual car show that attracted over 20 international entries. Among the entries were cars from as far as Australia, Mexico, England and a host of others from South Africa, Malawi and Namibia.Phoenix Aviations' 1928 Ford Tudor, which won the last year's overall title, was relegated to second position as Mathias Koehler's 1972 Jaguar took the third position.In the motorcycle category, Italian Angelo Agagliate emerged winner with his 1937 Moto Guzzi followed by Sati's Classics with a 1925 DKW in the second position and Karl Pleitz with a 1959 BMW. The Event, which was the 41st edition, has been sponsored by Access Kenya for the last three successive years and is organized by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club.
