Twyfelfontein - rock carvings, Namibia
Duration : 448 Seconds

Twyfelfontein (Khoekhoegowab: |Ui-||aes) is a site in the Kunene Region of Namibia containing 2000 figures of rock carvings. In 2007, UNESCO approved it as Namibia's first World Heritage Site. The figures at Twyfelfontein were created over the course of two thousand years, before 1000 AD. The hunter-gatherers who lived in the region created them as part of their rituals. The carvings represent rhinoceroses, elephants, ostriches and giraffes as well as depictions of human and animal footprints. Some of the figures notably the "Lion Man" depict the transformation of humans into animals. Wikipedia Most of the photo's will show you the rock carvings

Water Wars - Botswana
Duration : 1047 Seconds

Oct 1997 In the Okavango swamps, one of the world's greatest heritage sites is threatened with extinction because it's being drained by thirsty people. It's a microcosm of Africa's dwindling resources in the face of rampant human development. Beautifully filmed, this feature soaks up the abundant bird and animal life in this lush wet African paradise; hippos, lions, giraffe, deep blue sky on inland waterways. It's one of Africa's most famous reserves and the world's largest inland delta. The thirst of desert ridden Namibia is the problem. Namibia is short of water and now plans to draw water off the Okavango River, which feeds the swamps and runs through Namibia. The Namibians say what they will take is insignificant but Botswana says if the plan goes ahead the world will lose a unique treasure. Senior figures from both countries worry it could soon turn into a nasty confrontation. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Rehoboth, Namibia with traditional music performed by Reho Combo
Duration : 372 Seconds

Around 90km south of Windhoek is the historical town of Rehoboth, set in a dense acacia woodland of camel thorn, sweet-thorn and candle-pod acacia, but with several natural hot-springs. Many travellers pass through this town on their way to Sossusvlei, Hardap Dam, Fish River Canyon and on to Namibia's other main southern tourist attractions. The main inhabitants of the town are the Baster community, the descendants of people of mixed parentage who trekked across the Orange River under their leader Hermanus van Wyk, and settled at Rehoboth in 1870. The town is divided into 7 neighbourhoods, called blocks. The history of the Rehoboth Basters is recorded in the Rehoboth Museum, where their cultural heritage and archaeological finds in the area, such as an open-air burial site, are recorded. A camel-thorn tree referred to as the Kaptein's Tree was the venue for the meetings of the Kapteinsraad, an equivalent of the Chief's Council, in earlier times. Just west of Rehoboth (6km) is the Oanob Dam, which supplies Rehoboth with fresh water. This is also the site for the Lake Oanob Resort and Game Reserve, a favoured venue for day and weekend outings for locals and tourists alike, especially birdwatchers and water-sport enthusiasts. There are picnic places with barbecue facilities, a restaurant, bungalows and a number of walking trails around the dam. Another popular attraction for tourists and locals is the Reho-Spa which offers a heated indoor pool and outdoor pool. An area of ...

Südwesterlied - Gé Korsten
Duration : 205 Seconds

Mein Freund Heinz Springstvl in Deutschland, das hier ist für dich! Ich habe Deutsch in der Schule, vor langer Zeit, kann aber nicht viel merken! Ook vir die 2 Suidwesters, Dirkie en Hercules, wat saam met my in die Slavenhuis gebly het, julle ouens was altyd vriendelik, net soos Suidwesters is. As julle dit lees en wonder wie ek is, my broer was ook daar, sy bynaam 'Jakkals' !! Southwest, the subject of this song, the country which this war against forces from within Angola was all about, and in which so much blood was spilled. A country with proud and good residents, amongst them White Afrikaans speaking Caucasians which for the most part were close to White Afrikaans speaking Caucasians in South Africa, although not always in agreement politically. Some background in a nutshell : The country now called Namibia, which prior to 1990 was called South-West-Africa (SWA), or Southwest for short (Südwest in German) by its residents, as well as by South Africa, was colonised by Germany in 1884, and called German South West (Südwest by the Germans) and during WW1 was taken in battle against Germany by the Boere forces - Boere referring to White Afrikaans speaking Caucasians from South Africa, who called the country "Duitswes" (Germanwest") - in 1914 and 1915. Southwest Africa was declared a League of Nations Mandate territory under the Treaty of Versailles, with the Union of South Africa responsible for the administration of South-West Africa. This basically continued until the ...

WHEN VISITORS COME - QUAND LES INVITES ARRIVENT
Duration : 52 Seconds

www.der.org The film is about the relationship between Rina Sherman, filmmaker and ethnographer and an Omuhimba family with whom she lived for seven years, filming and photographing aspects of their everyday and ritual lives. Halfway through her tenure in the field, Rina Sherman presented a multimedia exhibition, entitled "The Ovahimba Years: Work in Progress" in Windhoek, Namibia. A group of young people from the community of Etanga participated in the exhibition. The film explores the evolution of this relationship that lead to the exhibition, shows the group of young people discovering the presentation of their cultural heritage at the exhibition, holding performances as part of the programme presented, and shows the resulting discussions and consequences of the exhibition, once everyone is back in Ovahimba country. "Ovaryange Tji Veya" is a film about an anthropologist in situ, and evokes several notions central to fieldwork, such as the nature of the bond between the observer and the observed, the observed observer, participant-anthropology and emotion as possible vector or hindrance in fieldwork.
