Deep inside Burma smartly dressed in crisp new uniforms the Shan proudly parade their revitalized troops Though the Shan used to be drug producers they have now joined the war against drugs in return for international assistance. US Admiral Blair describes the assistance the US has channelled through Thailand for the new anti-drug army; "We've provided training teams, upgraded equipment and increased intelligence sharing". But with China backing the Burmese this drugs conflict is rapidly becoming something much larger. Says renown Burma watcher Bertil Lintner, "you've got the Burmese army backed by the Chinese and the Shan by the Thais and Americans -- it's not far fetched to believe things could go awfully wrong if not handled carefully". The Burmese army's abusive treatment of convicts who are forced to serve as porters under dangerous front-line conditions constitutes war crimes, Human Rights Watch and the Karen Human Rights Group said in a joint report released today. The report, titled "Dead Men Walking: Convict Porters on the Front Lines in Eastern Burma," details abuses against convict porters that the rights groups say shows the need for a UN inquiry into the Burmese Army's practices. Twenty World War II Royal Airforce Spitfires'' buried in airfields in Myanmar are to be retrieved following a deal reached between the visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron and the country''s authorities. The aircraft were shipped to Myanmar (then Burma)in the summer of 1945, two weeks before atomic bombs were dropped on Japan which brought the war to a sudden end. The Spitfires never saw action as Earl Mountbatten ordered them to be hidden to prevent them falling into the hands of the advancing Japanese forces. The tiny fighters, which came straight from production lines were buried in crates at a depth of 4ft to 6ft to preserve them and their whereabouts became lost after the RAF struck off their locations from records, the Daily Mail reported. But aviation enthusiasts, aided by experts from the University of Leeds and a Second World War veteran who witnessed their burial, believe they have now discovered their locations using ground penetrating radar technology. So now under the pact between Cameron and Myanmar President Thein Sein, Britain wants to unearth the aircraft and restore them to their former glory. The British want to hunt the Spitfires in a joint heritage project. The condition of the cargo boxes and aircraft, whose wings and body are buried separately, is unknown. The New York Times An Ethnic War Is Rekindled in Myanmar-Burma Myanmar, formerly Burma, is riddled with ethnic civil conflicts, but this is the largest, with the greatest at stake. Right on the Chinese border, Kachin State is rich in jade, gold and timber, and has rivers that are being exploited by Chinese hydropower projects. Part of the state has long been controlled by the Kachin Independence Army and its political wing, which levies taxes on all commerce. The army allowed a reporter and a photographer recently to visit an area rarely seen by Western reporters for one week.

May 19, 2011 -- The Burmese government's road construction to the headquarters of the KIA's Brigade 4, in Loikang, in Northern Shan State, was stopped temporarily on Saturday, May 14. The branch road construction from the Kutkai-Tamonye-Mongsi to the Brigade area stopped when the KIA warned it would take action against the road construction site on Saturday. KIA officials say war will break out if the central government resumes road construction.

A new war front was opened between Burmese Army troops and Kachin Independence Army (KIA) soldiers on Wednesday afternoon, at 4:30 pm local time in Puta-O district in Kachin State, Northern Burma. There is heavy fighting between Burmese troops under the Puta-O Military Strategy Command-3 and KIA soldiers of Battalion 7 under Brigade 1. The war front spread to Puta-O (Putau in Kachin) a couple weeks after government troops launched a full-fledged military offensive against the KIA in Sang Gang in N'mawk (Momauk) township in Manmaw (Bhamo) district. The new war zone is at the head of Hkrang Hka River in the Triangle Area (Mali-Hkrang Walawng in Kachin) in the southeast of the district. The Burmese government's offensive against the KIA ended the 17-year-old ceasefire between them. Civil war has been intensified in Kachin State and Shan State since June 9.
