After years of war and isolation, Southeast Asia's most pristine environment, intact cultures and quite possibly the most chilled-out people on earth mean destination Laos is fast earning cult status among travellers. It is developing quickly but still has much of the tradition that has sadly disappeared elsewhere in the region. Village life is refreshingly simple and even in Vientiane it's hard to believe this sort of languid riverfront life exists in a national capital. Then, of course, there is the historic royal city of Luang Prabang, where watching as hundreds of saffron-robed monks move silently among centuries-old monasteries is as romantic a scene as you'll experience anywhere in Asia. Although the military government has officially relocated the capital to Naypyidaw since March 2006, Yangon, with a population of four million, continues to be the country's largest city and the most important commercial center. Yangon's infrastructure is relatively undeveloped compared to those of other major cities in Southeast Asia. Yangon has the largest number of colonial buildings in Southeast Asia today. Unquestionably one of Asia's most iconic sites, Burma's remarkable Golden Rock on Kyaikhtiyo Mountain is a trip that every serious traveller should make in their lifetime. Most that do will drive up the mountain, disembarking close to the summit. Those in the know, however, trek from the 'base camp' at Kinpun. In Easter 2008, I visited Burma (Myanmar) - home to a totalitarian military dictatorship. This video documents my travels in Mandalay, Amarapura and Saigang including footage of Mandalay hill, a traditional puppet show, temples, Kuthodaw Pagoda (the world's biggest book) and U Bein's teak Bridge. As a tourist, I was careful to minimise any money going to the government infrastructure and was welcomed by the Burmese people throughout the country. I felt the US$1 spent on the Circular Railway was worth the interactions it bought with local people from all around the city - I spoke to journalists, students, military-men and ex-civil servants about the situation in the country. There are no right or wrong answers in response to whether or not foreigners should visit Burma - but all who choose to go should ensure they do extensive reading before and during their travels. You can also visit www.JasonVitug.com During my trip to Northern Thailand, I heard about the Long Neck tribe from Myanmar that have sought refuge into Thailand. A couple of friends and I took a train up to Chiang Mai, busses to Pai then took 1864 curves to get to Mae Hong Son where we met an amazing tour guide, Niti Siriwat, who brought us to the Long Neck Village 2 km from the Myanmar border. We met the Kayan and a Red Kayan who just moved into the village a month ago. We spent the entire day in the village and was well worth the exhaustive trip. This video is a short film of a great time learning about the Kayan culture.

Bagan, the ancient royal capital of Myanmar, is one of Buddhism's three greatest monuments, along with Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Borobadur in Indonesia. Bagan is a land of myriad centuries-old pagodas. It was from where, in the 11th century, that the great warrior king Anawrahta set out to unify his empire and propagate Theravada Buddhism.

Like a ribbon that strings six diamonds, the Lancang-Mekong River connects China (its Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to be exact), Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam to form the Greater Mekong River Sub-region. Until now few attempts have been made to report on this giant river from a macro-perspective, so, as this is the first program of the series, it seems necessary to first describe this "ribbon", the Lancang-Mekong River. The Lancang-Mekong River is both enormous and charming at the same time. Just like any other river, at the place where this one begins it is small, but it quickly grows huge, dynamic and strong, and as it makes its way to the ocean it is joined by numerous tributaries. The river's fascination is largely ascribable to the abundant resources of the six countries through which it passes: these resources are not only mineral, but cultural, geographical and human, and the humans that live in the nations touched by the river share a genuine love of life. This program, as the first in the series, looks at the river's geographical features, the sub-region it has formed, and other background knowledge that will be helpful to appreciate the Lancang-Mekong River and the life that flourishes around it.
