| | Burma - The Road To Mandalay [Part 2/2] Duration : 843 Seconds Burma, also known as Myanmar, has long been closed off to the scrutiny of the outside world. You've always been able to travel there as a tourist, albeit with restrictions, but with the leading opposition figure Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest for much of the past couple of decades, and her calls for tourists to boycott Burma, relatively few made the journey. It was certainly off the menu for journalists and camera crews. The only way in for them was to pose as a tourist and use a small camera. Asking ordinary Burmese about their real feelings was just too dangerous for most, as it could lead to imprisonment for those speaking out. For years the place has been ruled by a corrupt military junta that brutally suppressed all opposition, used forced labour and imprisoned thousands for their political views. Their main ally and investor has been neighbouring China, which has an eye on Burma's many resources, including oil, gas, timber, gemstones and minerals. But recently -- and suddenly -- things have changed. After elections that most observers regarded as a total sham, the new government made a series of surprise announcements. It released Aung San Suu Kyi, suspended a hugely unpopular dam project with China, freed thousands of prisoners and signed peace pacts with a number of warring ethnic groups. Even Hillary Clinton dropped in for a visit, hot on the heels of diplomats from countries all over the western world who are hoping they might be able to lift economic ... Tags :Myanmar, Burma

| | Tom's Travels: Burma/Myanmar 2008 - Moustache Brothers Interview, Mandalay's political comedians Duration : 765 Seconds In Easter 2008, I visited Burma (Myanmar) - home to a totalitarian military dictatorship. As a tourist, I was careful to minimise any money going to the government infrastructure and was welcomed by the Burmese people throughout the country. There are no right or wrong answers in response to whether or not foreigners should visit Burma - but all who choose to go should ensure they do extensive reading before and during their travels. See: www.freeburma.org and www.freeburmacoalition.org Journal extract (more on my website - link at the bottom) "The activist comedy troupe The Moustache Brothers were one of the big reasons I wanted to come to Myanmar they claim they 'are alive because of tourists', and have been covered numerous times by the BBC and international press. To me, they are heroes - their live performance combined screwball comedy, classic Burmese dance, and satirical criticism of the totalitarian regime. This has, of course, led repeatedly to their arrest Par Par Lay was recently released from prison after doing 7 years hard labour (breaking up rocks with iron bars across their legs). They were banned from performing in Burmese in public, but today they perform to tourists from their front room. Apparently, when they first started doing this, the Myanmar secret police (or the 'KGB' as the comedy trio call them) watched and filmed their show. Since then, and perhaps due to the support of tourists, Amnesty International, the world's media and comedians in the UK ... | | Myanmar begins vote Duration : 122 Seconds Voters in Myanmar headed to the polls Sunday in a historic election, the first time credible alternatives to the ruling party have appeared on the country's ballot. Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner who symbolizes the fight for democracy in the Asian nation, is one of the candidates competing for 45 parliamentary vacancies created by the promotion of lawmakers to the Cabinet and other posts last year. Released in 2010 by Myanmar's military rulers after years under house arrest, Suu Kyi has been traveling up and down the country, rallying support for her once-banned National League for Democracy party. Polls opened 6 am Sunday (7:30 pm ET Saturday), and were set to close eight hours later. Voters will weigh in during a time of enormous change in Myanmar, also known as Burma, which has been secluded and ruled by a military junta for decades. In the past 12 months, the country has pardoned hundreds of political prisoners, secured a ceasefire with Karen rebels and has agreed to negotiate with other ethnic rebel groups. Freer press rules have encouraged the proliferation of journals and magazines. Myanmar's efforts to thaw its frosty relations with the rest of the world have been warmly welcomed and rewarded. In recent months, a steady procession of foreign ministers has visited the country and, in February, the EU lifted a travel ban on Myanmar officials. There have been hints too that the a free and fair vote on Sunday will lead to the relatively swift ... Tags :Myanmar, Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar Election

| | Suu Kyi Leaves Myanmar for the First Time in 24 Years Duration : 127 Seconds Transcript by www.newsy.com BY NIELS SCHACK NORGAARD ANCHOR CHRISTINA HARTMAN For the first time in 24 years, Aung San Suu Kyi (Ang Sang Suu Shi) is leaving Myanmar. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has announced she will travel to Norway and England. Jonah Fisher, the BBC's correspondent in Bangkok, says Suu Kyi's decision to travel is a milestone in modern Burmese history. "This is a hugely symbolic moment for Burma, a sign of the growing confidence Aung San Suu Kyi has in the reform process and the confidence she has in the military backed government that she's now dealing with on a regular basis." Earlier this month, Suu Kyi met with English Prime Minister David Cameron, who invited her to England. The Guardian writes it's 'unprecedented change in Burma' that is causing Suu Kyi to finally leave the country whose former military government kept her under house arrest for 15 years. "[The change] began when a nominally civilian government took power in 2010 and Thein Sein (Thane Sane), the president, ushered in a series of reforms. Among these was greater freedom of the press, ceasefires with ethnic rebels and the release of political prisoners." But why is she travelling to Norway? Well, her ties with the Scandinavian country started when the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. Kjell Magne Bondevik from Oslo's Association for Peace and Human Rights tells Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang "She has previously said Norway is the country she ... Burma's opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has drawn cheering crowds in recent public meetings outside Rangoon. Analysts say the gatherings are an important step for the new government to establish the ground rules for dealing with the Nobel laureate and well-known dissident. Under police escort, the convoy of 30 vehicles transported opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on her first political trip outside Rangoon since her release from detention last November.
