President Rajapaksa begins his two-day official tour of Myanmar to strengthen bilateral and friendly ties. The President left for Myanmar this morning. He is visiting the country at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Myanmar. This is the first time that the President has undertaken a foreign tour after eliminating terrorism. This is also the first visit by a Sri Lankan President to Myanmar. He was accorded a warm welcome on his arrival at the Nay Pyi Taw Airport this morning. The President and his entourage were greeted by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe. President Rajapaksa was accorded a Guard of Honour at the Airport. Both countries maintain very close and cordial relations influenced by Theravada Buddhism. Myanmar extended an outstanding support to the operations to wipe out terrorism from the island. It also fearlessly supported Sri Lanka amidst world powers at the UN Human Rights Council. Sri Lankas Ambassador to Myanmar Newton Gunaratne said the Presidents visit is aimed at further consolidating bilateral and friendly ties. Myanmar and Sri Lanka have opted to work in mutual cooperation during international parleys. The President held talks with Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar General Than Shwe yesterday. A banquet was hosted last night in honour of the President and his entourage at the State Leaders residence. The President during talks with the Myanmar State Leader said the priority of his Government was to create an atmosphere conducive for all people in Sri Lanka to live in peace and harmony. About 100000 innocent lives were lost in 30 years of terrorism. The President appreciated the support given by Myanmar to crackdown on LTTE drug rackets and other illegal activities within the region. The Myanmar State Leader consented to visit Sri Lanka. Both leaders agreed to formulate the agreement signed between the two countries for direct air services in 1950 to suit the present needs. He also agreed to offer placements for two officials of Myanmar Armed Forces to be trained at the Kotalawela Defence Academy. The Myanmar State Leader opted to explore the possibility of providing marbles for the Pagodas that are to be built in the Nine Provinces in Sri Lanka.

President Rajapaksa returns home after a very successful official tour of Myanmar.. It was the first official visit undertaken by the President after the resounding victory over terrorism The President toured Myanmar at the invitation of the Prime Minister of that country. On his arrival, the President was accorded a red carpet welcome and a Military guard of honour. He was greeted by the State Leader Than Shwe. The visit provided an opportunity to reach several decisions critical to the two countries. A 50000 US Dollar donation was made for development of the North. Two important MOUs pertaining to the promotion of tourism in Sri Lanka and to ease the visa obligations for Myanmar nationals to visit Sri Lanka, were inked. Leaders of the two countries opted to restructure the 1950 agreement on Air Services to suit the present needs. In response to the Presidents announcement of his plans to build pagodas in the nine provinces, Myanmar pledged to explore the possibility of providing marble for the project. The President held official discussions with the Myanmar Prime Minister and high ranking officials during the visit. He also seized the opportunity to visit places of cultural and historical value. The Presidents visit was an impetus to further strengthen the historic ties between Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

The Head of State of Myanmar has stated that the World appreciates the attempts made by the Sri Lankan President to completely eliminate terrorism and to steer the country towards development. President of Myanmar Than Shwe made this statement when he met with President Rajapaksa last evening at the Presidents House in Kandy. First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa was also present. Bilateral discussions were also held between the two leaders. The two leaders agreed on an exchange programme between Sri Lanka and Myanmar for students of Buddhism. The President said that the Sri Lankans are saluting the head of state of Myanmar for visiting the country. The President also invited him to construct the International Buddhist Centre at Piliyandala according to a Myanmar model. A special cultural show was held. The leaders also fed some baby Elephants. The President hosted a dinner at the Kandy Presidents House in honour of the visiting leader. Ministers and a large number of distinguished guests were present. The Myanmar President who arrived at the Dalada Maligawa was welcomed and taken in a colourful procession. After paying homage to the Dalada Maligawa, President Than Shwe viewed the Museum.
