Hi on this Monday, May 5, 2008. I'm Rebecca Field with your UPI top news update. The death toll is continuing to rise following that devastating cyclone in Myanmar over the weekend. Local media reports nearly 4000 are dead and another 3000 people are still missing after the 10 hour long deadly storm hit. Government officials say the count could reach 10000. Relief organizations like the Red Cross are preparing to send aid. The government from neighboring Thailand is also reportedly sending over aid supplies...at the request of Myanmar's leaders. The United Nations Secretary-General ban Ki-Moon says the UN will provide assistance as needed. Animal rights groups are all fired up after the Kentucky Derby race went sour over the weekend. PETA is requesting jockey Gabriel Saez be suspended after his horse Eight Belles broke both her front ankles during the race. The animal had to be euthanized following their second place finish. The group says the horse was injured before the finish, and is asking for an investigation to find out if the jockey was aware of that. If found at fault, PETA wants to second place prize of $400000 to be taken away. Early trading numbers show investors are dropping Yahoo shares. The company's shares reportedly dropped more than 22 percent in pre-market trading after Microsoft dropped a several billion dollar deal to take over Yahoo. The two companies reportedly couldn't agree on a price. Yahoo apparently was firm on $37 a share and would not accept ...

And there is a story from one villager who says the military opened fired on a group of villagers who were searching for food and water. Here's more. STORY: Despite the footage showing an orderly aid operation on Burma state television, footage from Democratic Voice of Burma tells a very different story. Many villagers say the government is not giving them support, and that they are being forced to rely on local donations to survive. One villager also said soldiers had opened fire on a group of villagers who were searching desperately for food. 2nd September 2010 is the 70th Anniversary of BBC Burmese Service Broadcasting and Burma Democratic Concern (BDC)'s Director Myo Thein shares the knowledge of Burma crisis and congratulate the BBC Burmese service for its dedicated neutral, impartial and up to the last mintue reporting. Myo Thein said "As the democratic activist who value and respect democratic principles, I agree to disagree. I also value the media's impartiality since in Burma current military regime as well as its pre-successor use the media as the propaganda tools. So for us we have to rely on independent media like BBC Burmese to have the reliable information". Regarding about the junta planned 2010 election Myo Thein said "There will be no single democratic genuine change coming out from junta's planned 2010 election. Before we possibly address the 2010 election, we have to look at the 2008 constitution which is adopted and drafted unilaterally by the junta which designed to cement military rule forever in Burma which took 14 years long to draft it. If we look at the referendum, adopting process, they do it unilaterally even in the mist of the cyclone Nargis. Every year, Taunggyi Tazaungdaing lighting festival is held with hot air balloon launching competitions. We are now at the foot of Sulamuni Lawkachantha pagoda hill and you will see lots of youth and children who are participating day time amateur level hot air balloon launching competition. When they become elders or when they become old they can continue to join that competition for their rising. In the day time competition, three types of balloon are launched. The balloons are specified to be the local life of bags and toys. The judges give points on the similarities of caricatures to the depicted animals or things. It should be distinctive and natural. The most important of however is the balloon must not be burned during the launching.
