When American volunteer Ali Pinschmidt began teaching in Mozambique in 2003 with ADPP** she never anticipated making a documentary. But within a short time, she found the Mozambican people and way of life so captivating, she began to do some informal filming. Over two years, this footage evolved into a comprehensive montage of interviews, music, and scenes of daily life and work from both a Mozambican and international perspective. "The Things We've Learned" lends insight into the struggles and joys of modern Mozambican society while frankly depicting the difficulties and triumphs that international volunteers experience while living and working in Southern Africa. Chapters include a personal look at the still taboo AIDS epidemic; the overwhelming impact of health concerns such as malaria; the subsequent resiliency and spirit of a nation bound by community ties; an introspective look at the causes and consequences of poverty, and the self-esteem of a people acutely aware of their Third-World status; and the vibrancy of cultural exchange between a uniquely beautiful African people and an array of international volunteers and community development workers. "The Things We've Learned" is of particular interest for anyone considering work or travel in Sub-Saharan Africa. These compelling stories paint an overwhelming testament to the value of and need for international exchange and grassroots development work.
