Rebels opened fire on the vehicle on Friday, killing the driver and wounding nine others. The injured apparently included defender Serge Akakpo and back-up goalkeeper Obilale Kossi. Togo captain and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor said earlier: "As the captain I can say that if the security is not sure, then perhaps we will be leaving. "It is a football game and one of the biggest tournaments in Africa, but I don't think people are ready to give their lives. "A lot of players want to leave. They have seen death and want to go back to their families." Adebayor, who joined City from Arsenal for £25m last year, said he also feared the attack would tarnish Africa's image in the year when South Africa hosts the World Cup. The bus had just entered the Angolan enclave of Cabinda, where separatists have waged a three-decade long war, when it came under heavy fire for several minutes. South Africa is a vast country with extended borders and a long coastline that made great demands of the SADF. This meant that the SADF had to operate in an area and not along a front. This required special attention to logistics, strategic and tactical mobility, the need for blanket cover, decentralization of excecution and a night-fighting capability. Operational doctrine is the meeting ground between the broad imperatives of stratergy and the steady maxims of tactics, where if there is a "native genius" it will express itself. Intellectuals in South African military uniform-their numbers are not small-are today world leaders in the development of operational doctrine. Proceeding from assumptions that the SADF would face a numerically superior force, an unfavorable air situation, and unwillingness of the superpowers to tolerate a long-term conventional war lest they be drawn into it, the officers offer up a paean to the "dynamic element of warefare," namely, maneuver. The South African Army, they aver, can win on any battlefield in southern Africa only "if it can move faster & fight more effectively" than its enemies.
