Lost Voices - Street Children in Mozambique
Duration : 567 Seconds

August 2008 Edilson Dinande is ten years old and regarded as society trash. Hes a street child one of 400 who live on the streets of Maputo in Mozambique. He owes his way of life to the destructing civil war. But that war finished sixteen years ago and still the number of children scratching a living by collecting bottles and bits of metal for recycling or petty crime isnt getting any smaller. The street children seem to have been forgotten by society and the government and a new generation is growing up knowing nothing but street life. And yet Mozambiques economy is booming.

Survivor's guide: flood alert in Mozambique
Duration : 1437 Seconds

Mozambique is regularly affected by serious floods. In 2000 and 2001, more than 700 people died. However, when the floods came again in 2007 and 2008, the death toll was much lower. This is mainly due to the disaster preparedness efforts carried out by the Mozambique Red Cross Society and other partners. This film shows how the Red Cross network of community-based trained volunteers are ready to raise the alarm in villages as soon as the water level starts to rise and help affected people to move to higher ground. It also clearly shows the importance of investing in disaster preparedness to limit the effects of natural disasters such as floods. Mozambique volunteer: The Things We've Learned- trailer
Duration : 246 Seconds

When American volunteer Ali Pinschmidt began teaching in Mozambique in 2003 with ADPP** she never anticipated making a documentary. But within a short time, she found the Mozambican people and way of life so captivating, she began to do some informal filming. Over two years, this footage evolved into a comprehensive montage of interviews, music, and scenes of daily life and work from both a Mozambican and international perspective. "The Things We've Learned" lends insight into the struggles and joys of modern Mozambican society while frankly depicting the difficulties and triumphs that international volunteers experience while living and working in Southern Africa. Chapters include a personal look at the still taboo AIDS epidemic; the overwhelming impact of health concerns such as malaria; the subsequent resiliency and spirit of a nation bound by community ties; an introspective look at the causes and consequences of poverty, and the self-esteem of a people acutely aware of their Third-World status; and the vibrancy of cultural exchange between a uniquely beautiful African people and an array of international volunteers and community development workers. "The Things We've Learned" is of particular interest for anyone considering work or travel in Sub-Saharan Africa. These compelling stories paint an overwhelming testament to the value of and need for international exchange and grassroots development work. The video is available for sale as a 70 minute DVD or 120 minute ...

Vincent/Tom Cruise (COLLATERAL) - Mozambique Drill (2PAC feat. PHIL COLLINS - IN THE AIR TONIGHT)
Duration : 321 Seconds

This music video is a tribute to my all time favourite movie : Collateral directed by Michael Mann and character - Vincent, the professional contract killer played to perfection by Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise. It always fascinated me how the director succeded in presenting the collapse of a man's whole world, whole life in just one night - all wrapped in a brilliant & nail biting cat and mouse game in the unique atmosphere of Los Angeles. Cast : Tom Cruise,Jamie Foxx,Jada Pinkett Smith,Mark Ruffalo,Peter Berg, the cameos of Javier Bardem & Jason Statham. The background song i used is the late Tupac Shakur's Starin' Through My Rear View remixed with Phil Collins's hit song from his debut solo album Face Value : In The Air Tonight - it featured in Cruise's other movie from his early career - Risky Business (1983). Title : The "Mozambique Drill", also known as the Failure to Stop Drill, or Failure Drill, is a close-quarter shooting technique in which the shooter fires twice into the torso of a target (known as a double tap to the center of mass), momentarily assesses the hits, then follows them up with a carefully aimed shot to the head of the target. The third shot should be aimed to destroy the brain or brain stem, killing the target and preventing the target from retaliating. It's the very same method Vincent is using while taking out his targets. Lyrics : Staring at the world through my rearview Just looking back at the world, from another level you know what I mean ...

The small business approach to forest management in Mozambique
Duration : 236 Seconds

Mozambicans talk about the role that small businesses can take in protecting forests. Charcoal makers conserve tree stocks to ensure that they can be in business tomorrow; growers of medicinal plants export to South Africa and the value of this trade ensures that they protect their resource. But there are also illegal operators and regulation of business is an issue for both central and local government. This is one of the Canopy of Friends video clips, created under the Growing Forest Partnership (GFP) initiative, aiming to stimulate debate on new ways to manage the world's forests. Location: Mozambique, June 2009 Interviewees: Stakeholders in forestry in Mozambique including representatives of civil society, government (national and local), small business owners, foresters.

The Gule Wamkulu
Duration : 181 Seconds

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Gule Wamkulu was a secret cult, involving a ritual dance practiced among the Chewa in Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique. It was performed by members of the Nyau brotherhood, a secret society of initiated men.Within the Chewas traditional matrilineal society, where married men played a rather marginal role, the Nyau offered a means to establish a counterweight and solidarity among men of various villages. Nyau members still are responsible for the initiation of young men into adulthood, and for the performance of the Gule Wamkulu at the end of the initiation procedure, celebrating the young mens integration into adult society. Gule Wamkulu is performed in the season following the July harvest, but it can also be seen at weddings, funerals, and the installation or the death of a chief. On these occasions, the Nyau dancers wear costumes and masks made of wood and straw, representing a great variety of characters, such as wild animals, spirits of the dead, slave traders as well as more recent figures such as the honda or the helicopter. Each of these figures plays a particular, often evil, character expressing a form of misbehavior, teaching the audience moral and social values. These figures perform dances with extraordinary energy, entertaining and scaring the audience as representatives of the world of the spirits and the dead. Gule Wamkulu dates back to the ...

Trailer for A Healthy Society - how a focus on health can revive Canadian democracy by Ryan Meili, Purich Publishing, 2012. Video by Andreipedia www.youtube.com Music Wake Me Up At The Coast - Slow Down, Molasses slowdownmolasses.blogspot.ca Find out more www.ryanmeili.ca http @ryanmeili #healthysociety "The impact of the social determinants of health is well known to governments and to health care organizations. The major challenge before us lies in turning this understanding into concrete actions that have an impact on individual Canadians and communities." Hon. Roy J. Romanow, former Saskatchewan Premier, from the foreword Drawing on his experiences as a family physician in the inner city of Saskatoon, in Mozambique, and in rural Saskatchewan, Dr. Meili argues that health delivery too often focuses on treatment of immediate causes and ignores more fundamental conditions that lead to poor health. Income, education, employment, housing, the wider environment, and social supports: far more than the actions of physicians, nurses, and other health care providers, it is these conditions that make the greatest difference in our health. Brought to life by patient stories, A Healthy Society explores a number of specific health determinants, and ends in a discussion of democratic reforms that could help reshape the way we organize ourselves to create a truly healthy society. Through a mix of scholarship and story, the author proposes a new approach to politics. The use of human ...
