Jessica's Poem, Alto Molocue, Mozambique
Duration : 55 Seconds

12-year old Jessica from the litterature club at the Community Development Center in Alto Molocue, Mozambique, talks about her dream. Translation: I would like to be powerful / I would like to be powerful / So I could help / But I am nothing / I live in fear / Crying with sadness / Burn me, fire / Fire, burn me / Rain, come down / But it's not raining / Rain wetting my eyes / The eyes of these small stones / Who want to help but cannot / They are afraid to speak / They might lose their breath / Big stones forbid us to talk / We are awake / But they cover us with a black cloth / I would like to be powerful / To have freedom of speech / But I am nothing / I am a small stone / I would like to be powerful //

O'D Pixley's Forest Blog - Video 8 - The Death Of A Forest - Mozambique.wmv
Duration : 647 Seconds

I found these words on the back of Pedro Capela's book of poetry and wildlife flowers of Mozambique: "Unrealistic, beautiful, useless, deep, a perfect organized suicide." During the 15 years O'D and I have spent in the forest of the Nhamacoa, we have seen these words played out before our eyes The destruction of the beautiful indigenous forest of Mozambique is a form of organised suicide the Mozambicans rush like lemmings to their destruction, refusing to be pulled back from the abyss. Living only for the day and not caring about the future; they appear blind to the fact that forest resources are finite and if they don't look after it, their cooking pots are going to remain cold. You can reforest the vast tracks of emptiness but while it takes 5 minutes to cut down a tree, it takes between 40 -- 60 years to grow an indigenous forest. In the meantime, the habitat is gone, the animals become extinct, the fauna and flora die. Exotic or plantation timber such as quick growing eucalypt or pine isn't the answer as these so not produce the same conditions for the original flora and fauna that has been displaced by the destruction of the original forest. Son of a Slave `Womb-free.´ A poem...
Duration : 306 Seconds

Under Petrucio and Ana de la Merced Guimaraes's family home in Rio builders discovered a crude cemetary. The study of teeth from 30 partial skeletons establishes that the trade of at least 3 million slaves shipped from Africa to Brazil between 1550 and 1888 some of the slaves were native to what are now Sudan and Mozambique, in north-eastern and southern Africa. We met the old man in the interior of Pernambuco, some years back now and the poem is based on notes I still have of that short but memorable encounter. There´s no doubt at all that in some parts of the country conditions close to slavery still exist. A scandal of course. For the video clips of Sugar-cane workers I´m grateful to Grijpvogel for a wonderful three part documentary - `Sugar-slaves´. The Lei Áurea ("Golden Law"), came nearly seventeen years later than Ventre-Livre on May 13, 1888: the law that should have finally outlawed slavery in Brazil. Unfortunately there are still pockets of virtual slavery in the remote regions of this vast country. Desperate, dispossessed and uneducated males tricked by false promises to make long journeys into the wild only to find themselves then forced to labour at the point of a gun. Ventre Livre had been sanctioned by a woman, Isabel, Imperial Princess Regent of Brazil (1846-1921), while Emperor Dom Pedro II, her father, was in Europe. THE OLD MAN On his postage-stamp veranda, stippled by the sun and wrought-iron screen, bare-foot, almost blind, sits the son of a slave ...
