SABMiller -- Farming Better Futures SABMiller have recently launched the world's first commercial-scale cassava beer, brewed with cassava sourced from small scale farmers in rural Mozambique. Impala provides an income for local farmers, a use for the widely available cassava crop and an affordable beer for drinkers in Mozambique. Big Investors, Small Farmers in Africa: a Fair Deal?
Duration : 240 Seconds

This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Foreign investment in African land is growing. Countries like China, Saudi Arabia and South Korea are leasing or buying millions of hectares to grow food for their people. Research shows that many large land deals lack protections for small farmers. Contracts may guarantee leases for up to ninety-nine years, leaving local people without land for generations. Better practices balance exports with local food needs and give farmers ways to enforce promises by investors. They also make clear what kinds of jobs and how many jobs will be created. Smallholders can gain influence if they form cooperatives or unions or have the support of nongovernmental organizations. There are different business models for cooperation between investors and local farmers. Lorenzo Cotula is a senior researcher at the International Institute for Environment and Development in London. One popular method, says Mr. Cotula, is contract farming: "Contract farming has been around for a very long time and which essentially involves a company providing credit, inputs like seeds and fertilizers and training and all that, and then buying produce from the farmers at a fixed price when harvest time comes."Companies usually deduct the cost of the inputs from the final purchase price. He says contract farming represents up to sixty percent of tea and sugar farming in Kenya and one hundred percent of cotton farming in Mozambique ...

Biofuels from family farms
Duration : 279 Seconds

Biofuel production in developing countries has increased dramatically in recent years, but the benefits tend to remain concentrated in the hands of large-scale companies. Policies to include smallholder farmers will only be successful if they acknowledge the great variety of farming systems, says researcher Madeleine Florin. For more details on this research project, go to www.researchforglobaldevelopment.nl.

Integrated Bioeconomy System
Duration : 851 Seconds

The Integrated Bioeconomy System (IBS) The IBS system is an environmentally sustainable, economically feasible, simple and pro-poor holistic farming and environmental health improvement system. Its key concept is to recycle as much biomass and energy as possible in ecologically friendly ways and to optimize agricultural outputs while minimizing external inputs such as pesticides and chemical fertilizers. As a manifestation to this principle, the Integrated Biofarm Centre (IBC), a system and sub-system based sustainable agricultural and natural resource management model first emerged in 1995 on the outskirts of Addis Ababa and has since been established in other cities and villages of Ethiopia as well as three other African countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique and Côte D'Ivoire. At these IBCs, several appropriate technologies have been tested, validated and demonstrated, including alternative energy such as biogas and solar panels, double-digging, composting, water harvest and utilization techniques such as drip irrigation, hydroponics, modern beehives, botanicals, viticulture, sericulture and integrated pest and vector management. These systems, approaches and technologies used at the IBCs have been proven to restore the environment, improve livelihood and create wealth.

Sunset Malo Ga Kujilana
Duration : 81 Seconds

A compilations of shots of Malo Ga Kujilana (MGK) a farm in the village of Nomba outside of Lichinga, Mozambique. MGK was originally started as an experiment in sustainable farming. Now in its 6th year the farm is completely self-sustained, requires no outside money to operate, and is a major source of income for the village. The farm acts as a teaching tool to show surrounding communities that natural farming techniques, which do not require chemical based pesticides and fertilizers, can be prosperous and long lasting. The workers of the farm also take time each week to teach surrounding communities topics include nutrition and HIV/AIDS prevention. MGK is also one of the major growers of Artemisia, a natural anti-malarial that they sell to local hospitals and individual buyers. While some of the workers are in fact related most are not but have nevertheless formed a tight family that takes care of one another as well as their farm. We have been very lucky to stumble upon this project and look forward to learning more about it as our time here progresses.
