| | Rats Save Lives in Mozambique Duration : 134 Seconds CHEN: Giant rats in are being used to detect landmines in Mozambique. The rats, too light to set off the mines, are trained to smell and point them out to their handlers. Let's see how these peanut munchers are helping clear some deadly hazards. STORY: These giant pouched rats are working hard to rid Mozambique of landmines. Landmines are a dangerous legacy of the 16 year civil war with Portugal which ended in 1994. According to Handicap International, an estimated 20 people step on landmines every month in Mozambique. Under the umbrella organisation of APOPO, an NGO concerned with the global landmine problem, researchers came up with the idea for using rats in landmine detection. Seeing the expense and slowness of traditional methods using metal detectors and other foreign and expensive technologies, these researchers found the rat to be a ready local solution. [Mkumbo, Senior Rat Trainer]: "Rats are the animal which are social. They like friendship, you can handle them easily, you can train them easily, you can keep them easily. Also, they are intelligent to know what you need them to learn." These rats are light and will not explode mines, allowing them to sniff out TNT, then scratch the earth as a sign to their handler that a mine is present. The animal is then rewarded with a loud "click" from their trainer and a few peanuts and a bit of banana. The rats learn quickly to not miss a mine, or they might miss a meal. When they're not in the field, the rats train twice a ... | | African wild dogs in Niassa Reserve, Mozambique Duration : 57 Seconds Fewer than 8000 African wild dogs survive in the wild today. The remaining populations are being wiped out by indiscriminate destruction of their natural habitat, the spread of diseases such as rabies and canine distemper caught from domestic animals, and persecution by humans who view them as pests. Without urgent intervention to safeguard and maintain large areas of natural habitat for wild dogs, this iconic species could soon be extinct. | | Mozambique spitting cobra: Kruger Park, South Africa Duration : 28 Seconds As we were riding down a road within the park on an evening game drive, our driver guide suddenly stopped the truck because something was in the road. It turned out to be a Mozambique spitting cobra. Amazingly, despite warnings to all to keep their arms and bodies inside the truck, several people leaned out of the truck to get a better photo and look at the cobra. That is, until the guide explained that they spit venom 5 to 8 feet and some have even been known to jump. | | Mozambican traditional healers Duration : 268 Seconds Traditional healers in Mozambique have much more success than the professional doctors. Hospitals and medical supplies in the provinces are not always available, and the local people have more confidence in the spirits of the underworld that enter the body of the healers, than in medicaments from the pharmacies. All healers are members of AMETRAMO ("Associacao dos Medicos Tradicionais de Mocambique"- Association of Traditional Medics of Mozambique), that brings together practitioners from across the country and issues them a license to "doctor" activities. To help people, healers call spirits and give them their bodies for a short time for the session. These are, basically, spirits of wild animals, spirits of killed soldiers or dead relatives, and even the spirits of the Biblical prophets. After the session doctors give patients drugs from dried herbs and roots, or force to take their patients through a variety of "wellness" ceremony, such as taking a bath of goat's blood or doing medical blade cuts all over their body. Mozambique has more than 70000 traditional healers, while the professional doctors in the country are not more than fifteen hundred. Organization AMETRAMO was officially recognized by the government of the country nine years ago, and on August 31st around Mozambique is celebrated the Dia da Medicina Tradicional (Traditional Medicine Day). | | Lucy - abused & chained Baboon in Mozambique (4).3GP Duration : 138 Seconds I found Lucy (as i named her) chained next to a childrens playground in Tete in Mozambique near the Old airport. In this video of Lucy you can see how she lifts and drags her knotted chain (now only 2-3 metres long) behind her to reduce the pain as it cuts into what appeared to be gangrenous sores on her hips from what was the chain till I got the WWF to intervene and then they only made the owner change to a dog harness. I tried to get a picture of her hips but it is not very clear. Anyone with connections please ask them to help with this widespread problem in Mozambique or contribute to a worthwhile cause in the name of animals who have not choices becauses of man's inhumaneness to our animal friends who are trying to share what little we are leaving them of the planet. | | Globe Trekker - Globe Trekker- Mozambique featuring Ian Wright Duration : 2932 Seconds Ian Wright travels to one of the world's poorest nations, a country wiped off the tourist trail for twenty years by war but now on the rise again - welcome to Mozambique! Ian starts his journey in its capital Maputo where he meets artists working to heal the wounds of war. He views the city's colonial relics, lives it up in the Polana Hotel, one of Africa's most luxurious hotels, and shops at Ipanaema market - a real taste of Africa. Up the coast Ian finds himself in the Bazaruto Archipelago, a strip of islands off the coast that are fast developing as a diver's paradise. Here he comes up close to one of the world's most endangered animals, the dugong. Pressing on north to Chimoio, Ian finds out how the central region of the country is dealing with the terrible landmine legacy of its civil war. From here Ian crosses the mighty Zambezi River and continues his journey to Quelimane where he stops at Africa's biggest coconut plantation before learning about how locals are dealing with the lethal spread of the AIDS virus in Mocuba. Then Ian travels to the first European settlement in East Africa, magical Mozambique Island, which was built as a replica of Lisbon in Portugal. Finally, Ian travels to Mueba, Mozambique's most remote area where you won't find many travelers! He stops in the village of Mueba, famous for a massacre of its people by the Portuguese in 1960. As the men of the village perform the animal dance to bring healing to the land, Ian finds it a fitting summation ...
