| | The Chopi Timbila Duration : 201 Seconds UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The Chopi communities live mainly in the southern part of Inhambane province in southern Mozambique and are famous for their orchestra music. Their orchestras consist of five to thirty wooden xylophones, called timbila, of varying sizes and ranges of pitch. The timbila are finely manufactured and tuned wooden instruments made from the highly resonant wood of the slow-growing mwenje (sneezewort) tree. Under each wooden slat, a resonator made out of calabashes is fastened, tightly sealed with beeswax, and tempered with the oil of the nkuso fruit, giving the timbila their rich nasal sound and characteristic vibrations. The orchestras are composed of timbila masters and apprentices of all age groups, with children playing next to their grandfathers. Each year, several new pieces are composed and performed at weddings and other community events. The rhythms within each theme are complex, so that the players left hand is often executing a different rhythm from that of the right hand. Lasting about one hour, performances feature solo and orchestra themes, using varying tempi. Closely connected with the music are particular timbila dances that are performed by two to twelve dancers in front of the orchestra. Each timbila performance includes the solemn mzeno song, performed by dancers, while musicians play softly and slowly. These texts, full of humour and sarcasm ... | | Struggle for Freedom: Our Heritage Duration : 374 Seconds A new exhibition, A Struggle for Freedom: Our African Heritage, commemorates the slave prisoners whose hardships on the island stretched over two centuries -- from the days of Eva, Catharina and Maria in the mid-1650s to the mid-1830s. Their origins are often indicated in the name whereas others were named after the month they arrived or the master they served. The majority of Cape slaves (41 150 in total) came from Africa and Madagascar -- initially from Angola and the Guinea coast, later from East and Central Africa (Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and Congo). In addition, there were 17 315 slaves from India and 13 545 from the Indonesian islands. The exhibition features photos of Robben Island and other Unesco World Heritage sites in Africa and Brazil that are historically entwined with slavery. The triangular slave trade between Europe, Africa and the Americas has created striking similarities across the continents. For instance, the colourful architecture of the Brazilian city Salvador de Bahia bears an uncanny resemblance to the Bo Kaap, Cape Town's Malay quarter. | | The Gule Wamkulu Duration : 181 Seconds UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Gule Wamkulu was a secret cult, involving a ritual dance practiced among the Chewa in Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique. It was performed by members of the Nyau brotherhood, a secret society of initiated men.Within the Chewas traditional matrilineal society, where married men played a rather marginal role, the Nyau offered a means to establish a counterweight and solidarity among men of various villages. Nyau members still are responsible for the initiation of young men into adulthood, and for the performance of the Gule Wamkulu at the end of the initiation procedure, celebrating the young mens integration into adult society. Gule Wamkulu is performed in the season following the July harvest, but it can also be seen at weddings, funerals, and the installation or the death of a chief. On these occasions, the Nyau dancers wear costumes and masks made of wood and straw, representing a great variety of characters, such as wild animals, spirits of the dead, slave traders as well as more recent figures such as the honda or the helicopter. Each of these figures plays a particular, often evil, character expressing a form of misbehavior, teaching the audience moral and social values. These figures perform dances with extraordinary energy, entertaining and scaring the audience as representatives of the world of the spirits and the dead. Gule Wamkulu dates back to the ... Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Ilha de Mocambique, Mozambique Entry Title: "Ilha de Mocambique" Entry: "After a nice breakfast in Nampula and getting some errands done (like looking for contact solution--don't bother!) Eva and I headed to the minibus depot to find a ride to Ilha de Mocambique, which is the country's oldest colonial settlement. It was one of our top two destinations in Mozambique and we were excited to finally be going--everyone in Nampula including the MP we met is very proud of it and it recently won United Nations World Heritage recognition. We ended up being told we'd missed the last direct minibus so we braced ourselves for another complicated multi-leg trip. First we caught a minibus to Monapo which was a lovely drive and only took about an hour and a half. Then we caught a flatbed truck which sadly wasn't full so we waited for quite a while for it to fill up. Once again it was crammed unbelievably full and was one of the leats comfortable, although also one of the prettiest, truck rides we experienced. The vehicle stopped in every single town, which was neat to see but meant getting to Ilha a good five hours after we left Nampula (and after dark). Once we arrived we found a great little pensao with the help of our new guide Jamal, a spunky 15-year old with Casanova-esque aspirations. (He informed us ...
