Morocco: Prospects for Genuine Reform? 1
Duration : 1390 Seconds

Washington / Morocco Board News-- MoroccoBoard TV Has recently covered a major conference on Morocco in Washington that was organized by The Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED). The MBTV coverage followed up with interviews with conference participants... Overshadowed by the dramatic political transitions underway in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, political events in Morocco - including parliamentary elections have received very little attention in Western media. This belies the fact that the Moroccan political arena has been quite active in recent months. In July, Moroccans approved in a referendum constitutional reforms put forward by King Mohammed VI in an effort to respond to demands of protesters. Nonetheless, the youth-led February 20 Movement views these efforts as insufficient, calling for a boycott of the upcoming elections and resuming weekly protests to revive popular demand for further reform. This conference has examined the Moroccan political landscape, including expectations for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Who are the main parties competing, and who is likely to perform well? What political forces are supporting the calls for boycott, and how might this affect results and the voter turnout? How are these elections likely to impact the opportunities for substantive political reform including shifts in the balance of power between elected institutions and the monarchy? And what steps can the US and other international actors take to encourage ...

More releases are being called for to facilitate political progress in Morocco. Among the released was controversial preacher Mohammed Fizazi, who was sentenced in 2003 to 30 years in jail after he was convicted of inspiring 12 suicide bombers to kill 33 people in Casablanca earlier that year. The National Council for Human Rights says the pardon also commuted to limited prison terms death penalties for five others and life imprisonments for 37 others.
