Today Rosemary Kavanagh O'Carroll is applying copper shards to canvas on various painted fabric areas, in correlation with the fact that Morocco has gold and copper mines. The copper sheet strips are cut into minute pieces and applied to the canvas with tiny dots of glue. As a result natural and electric light is transferred onto the canvas and then is reflected off of the metal. Only certain small areas reveal the application of copper, as not to take away from the significance of the oil painting process itself.

It is afternoon and I am at the Mclean Community Center in VA to attend an event. As soon as I set a foot in the room, I am already exchanging hugs with faces I had not seen for months if not years, and hellos with individuals I meet for the first time. In the middle of the room, there are tables lined up with about 32 kids, age ranging from 2 to 14 years old, who are drawing with crayons. Some of them are demanding that their parents check on their work for approval while others are adamant that their parents do not even peek at their crafts. MBTV was busy interviewing kids and capturing these moments. On the far left corner of the room, there is a table with juices, water, and various types of cookies. On the wall to my right, I can see Moroccan and American flags and some posters hanging. As the afternoon progressed, I got the chance to mingle with few parents who were spread out in various small groups. Topics varied from discussing which airline to take this summer to travel to Morocco, to sharing information on various local schools kids attend, to the fast rate at which kids grow. It was pleasant to also hear parents compare and contrast the habits and ways of their children. Such was the setting at the second Youth Art Contest, part of My Morocco event series. Claudio Nelson Bravo Camus was a Chilean painter realist who lived and worked in Tangiers, Morocco from 1972 until the day of his death. Its name is possibly derived from the Berber goddess Tinjis (or Tinga), and it remains an important city for the Berbers. According to Berber mythology, the town was built by Sufax, son of Tinjis, the wife of the Berber hero Änti (Greek Antaios, Latin Antaeus). The Greeks ascribed its foundation to the giant Antaios, whose tomb and skeleton are pointed out in the vicinity, calling Sufax the son of Hercules by the widow of Antaeus. The cave of Hercules, a few miles from the city, is a major tourist attraction. It is believed that Hercules slept there before attempting one of his twelve labours. Tangier was ruled by Umayyads, Abbasids, Idrisids, Fatimids, Caliphate of Cordoba, Maghrawa Emirate, Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids and Kingdom of Fez before Portuguese conquest. When the Portuguese started their expansion in Morocco, by taking Ceuta in 1415, Tangier was always a primary goal. They failed to capture the city in 1437 but finally occupied it in 1471. The Portuguese rule (including Spanish rule between 15801640) lasted until 1661, when it was given to Charles II of England as part of the dowry from the Portuguese Infanta Catherine of Braganza. Churchill, Britain's iconic wartime Prime Minister, was also an accomplished amateur painter. He went to Marrakech in Morocco regularly, declaring it to be "one of the loveliest spots in the whole world." During these trips he met the Pasha's son, Hassan El Glaoui, who is now one of Morocco's most famous painters.
