Cactus Farming in Morocco
Duration : 93 Seconds

The cactus may be an inexpensive fruit, but Moroccan farmers see economic potential in this humble fruit. The government intends to develop and expand the industry, following in the footsteps of Mexico, which is a global leader in cactus farming. The plan is to include cactus in a broad range of products from cosmetics to food. A group of Mexican academics paid a visit to Ben Guerir, northwest of Morocco and shared their expertise on the topic in front of the Moroccan Association for the Development of the Cactus. "The production of cactus in Mexico is very important now because this product is used in many ways as food for animals and human beings and also for cosmetic and medical uses. In Mexico, we make many products out of cactus and we export them to many countries abroad. This plant is very important for our health because it reduces cholesterol and also sugar levels for diabetics," said Mexican academic Dr. Ana Lila Vigueras during the visit to Morocco. Abdelrahman Ait Hammou, the association's director, says awareness of the benefit of cacti is crucial in stimulating demand which in turn affects farmers' production. The first attempt in increasing the cactus industry was six years ago, with the aim of generating job opportunities, especially for rural women. Currently, eight varieties of cactus exist nationwide and the fruit can be found in markets year-round. Morocco plans to plant 300000 more square meters of cactus plants over the next five years. Speaker: Dr ...

Strawberry festival in Morocco informs producers of better methods
Duration : 154 Seconds

The second International Strawberry Festival came to close on Sunday in the Moroccan sea resort of Moulay Bousselham after having attracted participants from across the globe, including Peru, the birthplace of strawberries. "Through this fair, we seek to improve both the quality and the production of strawberries and also to make small farmers aware of the necessity to organise themselves in the shape of co-operatives or associations so they could benefit from exporting their product and the high earnings of exportations," said Chaoui Belassal, chairman of Moulay Bousselham community council. The festival spotlighted the fruit from Morocco's Gharb (West) region and acquainted farmers with advanced irrigation methods and the hazards of misusing pesticides and insecticides. Academics such as Professor Abderrahman Tenkoul of Ibn Tofail University said their involvement was crucial to the festival as scientific research could uncover ways to improve quality standards while safeguarding consumer health. The Nalsya Foundation for Development, Environment, and Social Action, a local non-governmental organization, collaborated with Moulay Bousselham communal council in coming up with newer, more efficient irrigation techniques, which could potentially save up to 35 percent of water usage. Over 3300 hectares have been devoted to strawberry farming in Morocco, mostly in the Northwestern area of the country. A large proportion of harvest is exported, and the strawberry industry ...

Tomato Farming in Morocco UNIDO and the MDGs by UNIDO.
Duration : 296 Seconds

Farmers in Morocco have been using a pesticide called methyl bromide until now, known to deplete the ozone-layer. Although the Montreal Agreement has banned pesticide by 2015, the European Union has banned all uses of the pesticide this year. This film shows us the UNIDO supported "Growers' Association Project," which supports farmers with new environmentally-friendly technologies and alternative growing techniques. UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. UNIDO recognizes the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as the overarching framework for collective action and believes that a competitive and environmentally-sustainable industry plays a crucial role in accelerating economic growth, thereby reducing poverty and helping to achieve the MDGs. The movie showcases selected activities of UNIDO.

UNV - Share the Story (Morocco)
Duration : 720 Seconds

A famous Arab proverb states, "The 1000 miles walk starts with one step." In the case of southern Morocco, local communities of the Iguiouaz oases and UN Volunteers have been making progressive strides in adapting to climate change to protect their environment. The population of this region relies mostly on farming, arboriculture and livestock farming, but fertile land is scarce when rain is infrequent. To address this situation, 600 community members have mobilized to strengthen the ecosystem's resilience to climate change and increase the adaptive capacities of the communities. Success of this community-based adaptation project depends on the engagement of local community volunteers in implementation and raising awareness. After all, as one community member says, "One hand alone cannot applaud."

By using the 'system of rice intensification' (SRI), more rice can be grown per litre. Results from SRI pilot projects, have shown substantial increases in crop yields while using about 30% less water.
