Archaeological Site of Volubilis (Morocco)
Duration : 470 Seconds

Volubilis contains essentially Roman vestiges of a fortified municipium built on a commanding site at the foot of the Jebel Zerhoun. Covering an area of 42 hectares, it is of outstanding importance demonstrating urban development and Romanisation at the frontiers of the Roman Empire and the graphic illustration of the interface between the Roman and indigenous cultures. Because of its isolation and the fact that it had not been occupied for nearly a thousand years, it presents an important level of authenticity. It is one of the richest sites of this period in North Africa, not only for its ruins but also for the great wealth of its epigraphical evidence.

The Roman Ruins of Volubilis, Morocco
Duration : 211 Seconds

www.TravelsWithSheila.com Not the best day for exploring the ruins of Volubilis from the 3rd century BC Rainy and Windy. Volubilis was an important Roman town with stunning mosaiacs (the rain brought out the intense colors), a vomitorium (I kid you not), along with other fun and "unusual relics" that you'll just have to watch the video to learn about. Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved Roman ruins in northern Africa. An easy stop on the route between Meknes and Fes and worth seeing.

Plato's Atlantis in the Souss-Massa Plain - Destruction of the archaeological site
Duration : 337 Seconds

The whole archaeological site is subject to massive destruction. Since our last visit in 2008 large ruins disapeared (eg a large city wall ca. 9km in length and ∅ ca. 3 m, which still can be seen via google earth, is already gone for ever !!! ) This destruction needs to be stopped AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ! We wish to express our conviction that the settlement is worth protection from further destruction. Moroccan and international authorities should adopt ecient protective measures to stop the plundering and stone evacuation from the site. An important step would be to include the site on the List of World Heritage in Danger (in accordance with Art.11 (4) of the Convention). Otherwise, treasures that may belong to the world's cultural heritage may soon be stolen or destroyed forever. This concerns not only stone monuments but also precious artifacts. The international archaeological community should render every assistance possible to preserve this unique site for future scientic investigation.

Morocco Volubilis roman ruins
Duration : 64 Seconds

In antiquity, Volubilis was an important Roman town situated near the westernmost border of Roman conquests. It was built on the site of a previous Carthaginian settlement from (at the latest) the third century BC, but that settlement overlies an earlier neolithic habitation.[2] Volubilis was the administrative center of the province in Roman Africa called Mauretania Tingitana. The fertile lands of the province produced many commodities such as grain and olive oil, which were exported to Rome, contributing to the province's wealth and prosperity. Archaeology has documented the presence of a Jewish community in the Roman period.[3]

Plato's Atlantis in the Souss-Massa Plain - Evidence for White, Red & Reddish Mica Plaster
Duration : 251 Seconds

Plato's Atlantis in the Souss-Massa Plain - Evidence for White, Red & Reddish Mica Plaster These colored plasters correspond very well to Platos plaster out of 'tin' (a white metal), 'copper' (a red metal) and 'Oreichalkos' (a reddish sparkling material). The small pieces of reddish mica plaster were found in close vicinity to the remains of a large city wall (length ca. 9 km) around the central mountain of the annular structure. An archaeological fact, that correspond very well to Plato's description of the city wall around the akropolis of Atlantis' capital.
