For the past four years the animals of the Temara Zoo near Rabat, have lived beside new development construction which has destroyed their habitat and caused much of the zoo's population to become sick or die. The government sold the 50 hectares of the zoo's land to the development company with the promise that the animals would be moved to a new zoo (in a "protected" forest...). So if you ever go to Morocco and have any interest in fossils you have to go to the Museum on the southern end of Erfoud and visit their Prep Lab. The quality of work coming from this small museum is some of the best in the world. Pictured here (in order of appearance): 1. Very large Crinoid plate, these are generally preped with an acid splash and then cleaned up a bi afterwards as seen here. 2. A smaller plaque but just as noteworthy; this is a new species of Crinoid and is being preped by having a black filler spread over the specimento make it stand out from the matrix a bit more and when it dries they remove the excess. This is to ensure the fossil doesnt fall apart. 3. A large trilobite plaque featuring several species of animals. First you notice the huge ammounts of Selenopeltis bucci, secondly there are two species of starfish pictures, and finally there are various other species of trilobites present-Asaphus, Onnia, and Bomstrella.

At our centres we see many cases of animals with injuries caused by accidents from going about their daily work. These are hazards of the job; but we also see examples of owners making injuries worse from a lack of animal welfare knowledge, like in Basel's case. Basel the cart mule was brought into our Marrakech centre one afternoon by two young boys. Basel had a large wound to his left forearm, which the boys said was caused by Basel getting caught in a door. Watch the video and see what SPANA did for him.

A little mule called Amina was born with a painful deformity to her fetlock joints which meant she was unable to straighten her front legs. She was brought to the SPANA centre in Morocco where our vets treated her, and now just a few months later here she is on her way to her new life in the mountains with a caring owner and her mother. I made this almost 10 years ago for my niece Charisma. Its some of the animals my ex-wife Annie and I videoed while making the documentary, Whispers on the Wind. It includes animals from Alaska, Australia, Thailand, Nepal, India, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya and Peru. Its kinda cool and kids seem to love it.
