'liquid gold' destroying Moroccan heritage For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Moroccans have harvested the precious oil of the argan tree for centuries, bringing prosperity to the rural Berber people. But now the insatiable global demand for the oil is threatening this 'tree of life'. The argan tree not only sustains the local people of South-West Morocco, it is also key to the local ecosystem. But its miracle oil, known as 'liquid gold', is now a must-have for Western cosmetics and the booming demand is destroying the forest. "Without that tree, the whole population will migrate to the cities to find work." With no simple solution in sight, the scramble for profit poses a bleak future for an ancient way of life. Morocco's Only Jewish Tour Guide: Raphy ElMaleh
Duration : 312 Seconds

Raphy Elmaleh returns to Taroudant, to the cafe where he first began his journey in the early 1990s to explore southern Moroccan Jewish heritage sites. Elmaleh, today Morocco's only Jewish tour guide, recounts how he felt drawn to explore the mysterious southern section of Morocco but also how he felt nervous: Taroudant was a different world from his native Casablanca. Elmaleh, though, describes meeting a Berber Muslim man named Moulay at the cafe in Taroudant's main square. Moulay was a retired bus porter who knew the region well. Amused by the young Jewish man sitting next to him in the cafe, Moulay offered to be his guide to the south. In this video, Raphy recounts some of their initial adventures, including spending Friday night with the last Jew in Taroudant (a man named Siso) and discovering a synagogue guardian waiting for the Jews to return (in the village of Arazane). At the time, Raphy was merely a curious young man eager to find hidden treasures in the south. As he laments in the video, he regrets that he did not have a camcorder then to document the colorful personalities he encountered in those days, many of whom have now died. Elmaleh's vivid recollections provide insight on the process of discovering and re-discovering Jewish heritage sites in southern Morocco.

MOROCCO 1930 - 1960, Jewish weddings
Duration : 428 Seconds

Jews of Morocco represent a remnant of an ancient, thriving community, which numbered over a quarter of a million in 1956. The largest community is in Casablanca, home to 2000 Jews. There are small Jewish communities in Rabat (400), Marrakesh (250), Meknes (250), Tangier (150), Fez (150), and Tetuan (100). The Jews are generally descended from three different communities: Sephardim, Berber Jews, and Ashkenazim. History: The Jewish community of present-day Morocco dates back more than 2000 years. There were Jewish colonies in the country before it became a Roman province. Under the Romans the Jews enjoyed civic equality. In 429 the Vandal King Genserich conquered North Africa. In the 7th century many Jews fled Visgothic Spain and introduced modern culture, industry and commerce. Several Berber tribes adopted Judaism and controlled a vast area, but they were eventually subdued by Arab invaders. The Jews lived in peace until the 11th century. In a 1033 pogrom in Fez thousands of Jews were murdered and the women were dragged off into slavery. When the liberal Almoravids came to power in 1062, conditions for Jews improved, but when the Almohades took over in the middle of the 12th century Jews were forced to embrace Islam or emigrate. It was during that time that Jews were forced to wear a particular costume a precursor of the Jewish badge. After the ouster of the Almohades in the 14th century the situation of Jews stabilized. In 1391 a wave of Jewish refugees expelled from ...

Falconry, a living human heritage
Duration : 651 Seconds

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2010 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Falconry is the traditional activity of keeping and training falcons and other raptors to take quarry in its natural state. Originally a way of obtaining food, falconry is today identified with camaraderie and sharing rather than subsistence. Falconry is mainly found along migration flyways and corridors, and is practised by people of all ages, men and women, amateurs and professionals. Falconers develop a strong relationship and spiritual bond with their birds, and commitment is required to breed, train, handle and fly the falcons. Falconry is transmitted from generation to generation as a cultural tradition by a variety of means, including mentoring, learning within families, or formalized training in clubs. In Mongolia, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, for example, falconers take their children to the desert and train them to handle the bird and build a relationship of trust with it. While falconers come from different backgrounds, they share common values, traditions and practices such as the methods of training and caring for birds, the equipment used and the bonding between falconer and the bird, which are similar throughout the world. Falconry forms the basis of a wider cultural heritage, including traditional dress, food, songs, music, poetry and dance, all of which are sustained by the communities and clubs that practise it ...

Tannery at Fes (Morocco)
Duration : 350 Seconds

Founded in the 9th century and home to the oldest university in the world, Fez reached its height in the 13th--14th centuries under the Marinids, when it replaced Marrakesh as the capital of the kingdom. The urban fabric and the principal monuments in the medina -- madrasas, fondouks, palaces, residences, mosques and fountains - date from this period. Although the political capital of Morocco was transferred to Rabat in 1912, Fez has retained its status as the country's cultural and spiritual center. The Medina of Fez is considered as one of the most extensive and best conserved historic towns of the Arab-Muslim world. The unpaved urban space conserves the majority of its original functions and attribute. It not only represents an outstanding architectural, archaeological and urban heritage, but also transmits a life style, skills and a culture that persist and are renewed despite the diverse effects of the evolving modern societies.

Mazagan
Duration : 588 Seconds

The Portuguese fortification of Mazagan, now part of the city of El Jadida, 90-km southwest of Casablanca, was built as a fortified colony on the Atlantic coast in the early 16th century. It was taken over by the Moroccans in 1769. The fortification with its bastions and ramparts is an early example of Renaissance military design. The surviving Portuguese buildings include the cistern and the Church of the Assumption, built in the Manueline style of late Gothic architecture. The Portuguese City of Mazagan - one of the early settlements of the Portuguese explorers in West Africa on the route to India - is an outstanding example of the interchange of influences between European and Moroccan cultures, well reflected in architecture, technology, and town planning.
